Description
Kunito Nakajō is a prominent figure in Shonan Junai-gumi, serving as the leader of the Enoshima branch of the second-generation Midnight Angels biker gang. He is a student at Enoshima Commercial High School and was previously the student at Enoshima P.S. 4, where he was the senpai of Tsukai Tsuyoshi. At seventeen years old, he possesses a commanding physical presence: his long black hair is worn in a ponytail, his face bears several prominent scars, and his build is notably muscular. His background within the delinquent hierarchy is deeply rooted. During junior high, he and his gang of thirty members were single-handedly defeated by the Oni-Baku duo of Eikichi Onizuka and Ryuji Danma, a loss that became part of the Oni-Baku legend and established a long-running, grudging respect between them. He later seized control of all Enoshima gangs, effectively becoming the head of the entire Enoshima faction of the second-generation Midnight Angels.
His motivations are tied to personal pride, loyalty to his territory, and a fierce sense of standing among the top fighters of Shonan. He participates in the "Great Shonan War," an internal conflict within the Midnight Angels that split the gang into three factions: the Enoshima faction under his leadership, Akutsu Junya as Masaki's successor, and Kamishima Toshiki's Inamura division. The conflict culminated in Kamishima being set on fire by Akutsu in the Enoshima Gate incident. When Akutsu is released from prison, Nakajō works alongside Kamishima, and they both pursue Masaki's legendary coat. He confesses to Tsukai, Saejima, and Katsuyuki that even after dealing with Akutsu, they will still have to face him. During these events, he demonstrates his combat prowess by single-handedly defeating a group of Midnight Angel bikers, then warning Akutsu that he is next after the coat is obtained.
His role in the story extends to critical conflicts between local gangs. He warns the Oni-Baku of the impending war between Enoshima and Tsujido, and later, during the fight over Katsuyuki's missing motorcycle, he calmly reveals that Makoto's bike is the one in question. When the Yokohama Cavalry invades Shonan and beats down his Enoshima men, he directly confronts their two leaders, Mauchi and Nakagaki. He dispatches Mauchi with ease but is struck from behind by Nakagaki. He subsequently calls in reinforcements from the Kamakura Massacre Unit and the Idaten gang to aid the Oni-Baku against the Yokohama Cavalry. After the battle, a police officer named Mouri, who has a prior connection to Nakajō, tells him to stop fighting and grow up before Eikichi beats him to it; Nakajō replies hastily that he does not need to be told such a thing, hinting at his own awareness of his situation.
A later misunderstanding arises when a figure named Yagyo Atsuki attacks both Enoshima High and Tsujido High students. Nakajō and the Oni-Baku initially suspect each other of being Yagyo Atsuki. He sends a new transfer student, Kashiya, to spy on the Oni-Baku, then goes to Tsujido High to settle the score with Eikichi. Their fight is interrupted by Yagyo Atsuki’s brutal assault on Tsukai, which forces both to realize that neither of them is the true enemy.
In terms of personality, Nakajō is usually composed for his age, a reflection of being slightly older than the central Oni-Baku duo. However, he is not above explosive fury; when the Oni-Baku once blew up his beloved car, he retaliated by chasing them with a Japanese katana, revealing a vengeful streak. He is respected as a leader and is a tough, seasoned fighter who rarely shows weakness. His relationships are defined by the balance of rivalry and mutual recognition with Eikichi and Ryuji, as well as the tense dynamics with the other Midnight Angel factions. Key development points lie in his gradual shift from being a territorial gang leader pursuing the mantle of Midnight Angel to a figure who, while still fiercely independent, ends up coordinating with former enemies against larger threats and receiving an outside call to maturity.
Notable abilities include substantial hand-to-hand combat skill enabling him to defeat multiple opponents unarmed, the capacity to lead and command a large group of delinquents, and the resilience to survive large-scale brawls. He drives a Nissan Fairlady Z and works at a Select petrol station. His scarred face and ponytail, together with his solid reputation, make him an instantly recognizable and formidable presence throughout the series.
