Description
Natsuki Mizuki Smith, more commonly known simply as Natsu, is a significant supporting character in Shonan Junai-gumi, first appearing in chapter 129 of the manga. He is a seventeen-year-old half-American, half-Japanese youth who lives in Honmoku, Yokohama, with his older sister, Fuyuka. Growing up, Natsu was a quiet and isolated child, seen by others as a weirdo and lacking friends. His father was a policeman and an alcoholic, and Natsu spent much of his early life alone, often idly plucking at his bass guitar with a bent neck while staring through a fence.
Natsu's personality is defined by a profound sense of loss and a resulting descent into cold-blooded violence. He had a deep, almost dreamlike bond with his childhood best friend and next-door neighbor, Kamata. The two shared a dream of going to Los Angeles, America, to start a band and become famous musicians. Natsu often spoke of the American Dream. Using a broken radio as an amplifier, Kamata would play guitar over Natsu's bass lines, with Fuyuka singing. Fuyuka supported their ambition by buying them new guitars.
The defining tragedy that reshaped Natsu's entire life was the assault and subsequent suicide of his sister, Fuyuka. One night, Fuyuka failed to return home from shopping, and Natsu went looking for her with Kamata. They found her just fifty feet from their home, having been raped by a gang. The next day, Fuyuka committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. This event shattered Natsu's world and replaced his quiet nature with a burning, remorseless desire for vengeance.
Natsu's primary motivation becomes to kill Fuyuka's attackers and then escape to America with Kamata. He massacred the gang, but Kamata, having cold feet, arrived with adults to stop him. Natsu called Kamata a traitor as he was taken away, and this moment of betrayal from his only friend became a deep emotional wound that festered for years. In the years that followed, Natsu became known as Shinigami Natsu, or the Death Demon, for the brutal and seemingly joyful way he demolished anyone who opposed him.
He continued with music, joining the rock band Vebejail, but remained a loner. His first meeting with the band saw him beat a member for touching his violin bass without permission. That member later committed suicide, with rumors claiming he had seen death in Natsu's eyes. During a wild gig called the Lawless Demon, a brawl erupted on stage, and a smiling Natsu used his bass guitar to smash the head of one of his own band members, killing him. After this, he was labeled the Death Demon and forced out of the band. Fearing for their lives, former band members hired the Yokohama Calvary, a mob, to eliminate him in a contract known as the Death Contract. Natsu was targeted by eighteen hit artists, but he turned the tables, killing them one by one while grinning throughout. Only three hitmen survived, and Natsu was presumed dead when a car carrying him plunged into the ocean.
Four years after Fuyuka's death, Natsu reappears, spotted by Kamata in Yokohama. He begins hunting down ex-Vebejail members, pushing one off a building. He confronts Eikichi Onizuka and fights him to a standstill, a fight interrupted by police. Natsu later reassures Eikichi that he has nothing against Kamata, commenting on their friendship. He is eventually lured out by the Yokohama Calvary, who kidnap Kamata. Natsu surprises them by stating he does not have any friends, but he arrives to save Kamata anyway, revealing that a Death Demon cannot have friends because anyone near him dies. He admits he never forgot about Kamata, and the two former friends share a smile. As he helps Kamata up, he is shot from behind by Nakagaki. With his final breath, Natsu reveals that his father was once a jazz drummer who left his dream in America, forgetting to take it. He asks Kamata to come with him to America to search for their dream. He dies remembering the old days, telling Kamata that he was his only friend. After his death, Kamata finds a checkbook for an American Dream account that Natsu had been steadily depositing money into over the years. Kamata honors their promise by playing their song at Natsu's grave and then going to America by himself.
Natsu's notable abilities include immense physical strength and an almost supernatural level of brutality and resilience in combat. He is characterized by the look of death in his eyes, a feature that terrifies even hardened criminals. He is also a skilled bass guitarist. He rides a Honda Steed motorcycle.
Natsu's role in the story is that of a tragic, near-mythological figure whose past trauma has turned him into a living weapon. His arc explores themes of friendship, betrayal, grief, and the corrupting power of vengeance. His relationship with Kamata is the emotional core of his story, beginning as a shared dream and ending in a heartbreaking reconciliation and loss. His development is a descent from a quiet, hopeful boy into a ruthless killer, and his final moments offer a fragile, poignant return to the person he might have been.
