Description
The Master, also referred to as the Lord of Hell or the God of Hell, is the supreme supernatural entity that governs the Hell system within the world of Jigoku Shōjo. This figure is typically manifested as a giant spider with a single large eye on its back, though it sometimes appears only as a disembodied voice. The Master is the one who appointed Ai Enma as the Hell Girl after she destroyed her village in revenge, offering her a pact in exchange for the souls of her parents: Ai would become the messenger of vengeance, ferrying the damned to Hell for eternity. To enforce this role, the Master ordered Ai to suppress her emotions and act as an impartial observer of human suffering. The Master is also seen piloting the boat that carries Ai to Hell at the end of the first season, and it occasionally communicates with Ai to remind her of her duty. Its motivations are never fully explained, but it appears to maintain the cycle of hatred and punishment as an eternal, indifferent force. The Master has no direct relationships with other characters beyond Ai; it interacts with her as a master imposing a curse, and it also oversees the assistants such as Wanyudo, Hone Onna, and Ren Ichimoku, who serve Ai under the Master's authority. Throughout the series, the Master remains a cryptic, distant presence, rarely intervening except to reinforce the rules or remind Ai of her fate. Its notable abilities include command over Hell itself, the power to bind souls, transformation into a spider-like form, and the capacity to ferry souls across the boundary between worlds. The Master shows no development or change over the course of the story, remaining a constant, unknowable authority behind the Hell Girl's operations.
