Description
Kagemitsu Daigo is a central figure in the story of Dororo, serving as the lord of a domain and the father of the protagonist, Hyakkimaru. His actions are the catalyst for the entire narrative, driven by an overwhelming ambition to secure power and prosperity for his lands, regardless of the moral cost.

In his role as a feudal lord, Daigo is depicted as a stern, commanding presence who is fiercely determined to see his territory flourish and to etch his name into history. However, his methods are ruthless and pragmatic to the point of cruelty. Desperate to end a cycle of famine and disease that plagued his people, he forges a pact with a group of demons. In exchange for the prosperity and military might of his domain, he offers the demons any price they demand. Unknowingly or not, the price becomes his firstborn son, who is then born with numerous body parts and senses claimed by the demons as payment. This act of sacrificing own child for political gain is the defining event of his life.

Personality-wise, Kagemitsu Daigo is characterized by his immense ambition and self-centered nature. He is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to achieve his goals, a trait that makes him the primary antagonist of the story. He is often cold and calculating, viewing his family and subjects as tools or obstacles rather than people with intrinsic value. Upon the birth of his mutilated son, he coldly orders the infant to be set adrift in a river to die, demanding that his wife forget the child and produce a new heir. This detachment extends to his relationships; while he raises his second son, Tahomaru, to be a capable successor, this is driven more by the need for a functional heir than by genuine paternal affection. He lies and manipulates Tahomaru, pitting his own sons against each other to eliminate Hyakkimaru, whom he now sees only as a threat to his domain.

His motivations are rooted in a desperate desire for control and legacy. In many versions of the story, notably the 2019 anime, his wish is not purely for personal power but is also framed as a drastic measure to save his starving people from ruin. Nevertheless, the story makes clear that his ambition to become a great ruler overshadows any sense of morality or empathy. He believes that the ends of a stable, prosperous country justify the horrific means, including condemning his own son and launching brutal military campaigns. A physical mark of his deal with the demons is a scar in the shape of an "X" on his forehead, which serves as a constant visual reminder of his transgression.

Throughout the story, Daigo's role is that of a desperate antagonist trying to preserve the prosperity he gained through his unholy bargain. As Hyakkimaru travels the land slaying the demons and reclaiming his body, the pact begins to break. The demon statues in the Hall of Hell are destroyed one by one, and with each destruction, calamities like droughts and landslides return to Daigo's once-blessed domain. This forces Daigo into direct opposition to his son, as eliminating Hyakkimaru becomes the only way to potentially restore the broken contract and save his crumbling territory.

Key relationships define his character arc. His bond with his wife, Nui No Kata, is one of control and emotional abuse; he scolds her for her lingering attachment to their sacrificed son and disregards her deep sorrow. His relationship with Hyakkimaru is one of pure antagonism. When they finally meet, Daigo feels no remorse or familial love, only a desire to destroy the young man he refers to as a "half-demon child" who is undoing his life's work. Conversely, his relationship with his younger son, Tahomaru, is manipulative; he uses him as a pawn to kill Hyakkimaru, fostering hatred between the brothers for his own political survival.

Notable abilities for Daigo lie not in supernatural power or physical combat, but in political strategy and command. He is a capable military leader and strategist, able to rally armies and manage a domain. However, his true power was the demonic pact itself. Once that protection fades, he is revealed to be a mortal man whose cruelty and ambition have cost him everything, including his family and potentially his soul. In the climax of the 2019 anime, after suffering devastating losses, he is confronted by Hyakkimaru in the ruined Hall of Hell. Here, he still refuses to fully repent, arguing that his way is the only way to survive in a brutal world where one must either eat or be eaten. It is only after Hyakkimaru spares his life, telling him to live as a human instead of a demon, that Daigo experiences a true moment of regret, weeping over the son he abandoned and the future he destroyed. His final fate varies across different adaptations, but he universally ends his story as a broken man who achieved his ambitions only to lose everything that mattered because of them.
