Description
The character known as Father in the anime Dororo is Kagemitsu Daigo, the lord of the Ishikawa domain during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period. He is a powerful and ambitious feudal lord whose desperate choices drive the central conflict of the story. His appearance is that of a stern, authoritative middle-aged man with a commanding presence, typically dressed in the formal attire of a high-ranking samurai. A distinctive X-shaped scar on his forehead serves as a permanent, physical mark of the unholy contract he once made.

At his core, Kagemitsu Daigo is defined by an all-consuming ambition and a ruthless pragmatism. He is a utilitarian ruler who prioritizes the prosperity of his domain and the expansion of his own power above all else, including the welfare of his own family. He is cold, calculating, and manipulative, viewing people as tools to be used for his goals. While in some adaptations his initial pact is portrayed as a desperate act to save his people from unending famine and plague, it becomes clear that his motivations are equally driven by a desire for personal glory and national conquest. He dismisses emotional attachments as weaknesses and shows little to no remorse for the suffering he causes, often reacting with cold fury or condescension when confronted with the pain of others, particularly his wife.

His central role in the narrative is that of a primary antagonist, whose past actions set the entire plot in motion. Years before the main story begins, Daigo makes a pact with a group of demons at a temple known as the Hall of Hell. In exchange for the power to make his blighted lands flourish and to achieve his ambitions, he offers the demons anything they desire, not realizing they would claim a price from his then-unborn first son. When the child, named Hyakkimaru, is born missing numerous body parts and senses, Daigo coldly orders the infant to be abandoned in a river, viewing him only as the fulfilled cost of his transaction. Following this sacrifice, his domain indeed enjoys a period of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

Kagemitsu Daigo's key relationships are marked by manipulation and a lack of genuine affection. His connection to his eldest son, Hyakkimaru, is one of rejection and hostility. He shows no paternal love for the child he sacrificed, later viewing Hyakkimaru not as a son but as a monstrous threat to his power when he returns to reclaim his body parts from the demons. He actively seeks to kill Hyakkimaru to preserve the prosperity gained from their original pact. In contrast, his relationship with his younger son, Tahomaru, is rooted in duty and succession. He raises Tahomaru as the official heir, instilling in him a sense of loyalty and duty to the domain. However, this is a conditional love; he manipulates Tahomaru into opposing Hyakkimaru by framing the elder brother as a danger to the land, essentially pitting his two sons against each other. His relationship with his wife, Nui No Kata, is equally dysfunctional. He is emotionally abusive, dismissing her grief over their lost son and her subsequent guilt as a failure to understand political necessity. He shows no respect for her feelings and ultimately views her as a traitor when she sides with Hyakkimaru, even swearing to kill her.

Throughout the story, Kagemitsu Daigo experiences a complex arc of escalation and eventual collapse. Initially, he is confident and secure in his decision, enjoying the fruits of his deal with the demons. However, as Hyakkimaru travels the land and begins slaying the demons, each death causes the demonic pact to weaken, leading to renewed calamities like drought and war in Daigo's domain. This forces Daigo to acknowledge his son's existence, shifting from denial to a fierce determination to eliminate the threat he represents. His desperation grows as his forces are depleted, his family begins to turn against him, and the prosperity he bargained for crumbles. In the final confrontation, stripped of his power and having lost everything, including his son Tahomaru, Daigo finally confronts the consequences of his actions. In some versions, he experiences a moment of remorse, weeping and regretting that he did not keep Hyakkimaru as his heir. In other tellings, he remains defiant to the end, offering to sacrifice his own body to become a demon to protect his land, or requesting his son perform the ritual of seppuku to end his suffering.

Notable abilities of Kagemitsu Daigo are not supernatural in nature. He does not possess any magical powers or inhuman fighting skills. Instead, his strengths lie in his role as a leader and a strategist. He is a skilled military commander, capable of leading armies and devising tactical plans for battle. His true power, however, stems from his ruthless decisiveness and his ability to leverage the demonic pact, which provided his domain with immense prosperity and gave him a strategic advantage over his rivals. In some adaptations, particularly live-action films, he is depicted as a master swordsman capable of dueling his son, but his primary threat is always the weight of his authority and the terrible consequences of his ambition.
