Description
Piece is the enforcement entity that regulates the virtual recreation of Shibuya in the series Sh15uya. It is not a conventional character with a fixed body but a system that can take over the form of ordinary residents of the city in order to carry out its function. The name Piece is deliberately suggestive of a single slice of a cake, and the story later reveals the existence of a related entity called Whole, making clear that Piece is only one small component of a larger structure governing the virtual world.
In terms of background, Piece is part of an educational correction system created by Professor Ootomo to reform troubled fifteen-year-olds. The virtual Shibuya is a world built for this purpose, managed by Ootomo and the administrator Igaya, and Piece functions as the system's disciplinary arm. Although it appears to act as an executioner, the system's intended design positions Piece as a form of punishment or chastisement aimed at fifteen-year-olds who break the rules, with the broader goal of encouraging their growth rather than simply destroying them.
Piece's most distinctive trait is its habit of speaking in philosophical fragments. When it appears, it often delivers random philosophical statements or abstract questions, frequently related to history, without any clear connection to the immediate situation. This behaviour gives the entity a detached, impersonal quality, and it carries out its lethal judgments in a calm, almost ritualistic manner. It shows no personal malice, but it also shows no hesitation in performing its assigned role.
The motivation behind Piece is essentially systemic rather than personal. It exists to maintain control over the virtual Shibuya by punishing those who violate the world's laws, with violations ranging from murder to open rebellion against the system. When Piece locks onto a target, a crest appears on the back of that person's hand, and a nearby resident transforms into Piece to attack. The city's custom demands that the marked person accept this fate without resistance, saying "ittekimasu" while onlookers reply "itterasshai." Those who survive a marking are called yojire, or warped ones, and become outcasts subject to social stigma. When Piece is defeated, it reverts to the body of the citizen it borrowed and resumes that person's ordinary life as though nothing had happened.
In the story, Piece serves as the recurring enforcer that drives much of the conflict. Its killings reset the residents of Shibuya, who are returned to the city with new names, identities, and erased memories. It is responsible for the deaths of several key characters, including Chiko, whose death is the first shown in the series, Nami, whom Piece kills in a manner that actually saves DJ and briefly raises the protagonist's opinion of it, and Asagi, who dies after being marked a second time. Its presence repeatedly forces the main characters to confront the question of what Shibuya truly is and whether escape is possible.
The entity's most significant relationship is with the character Ema. Ema is the only person with the ability to summon armor and temporarily kill Piece, and she defeats it multiple times throughout the series, taking serious injuries in the process. She reveals that she keeps fighting and killing Piece for the sake of the protagonist, Tsuyoshi. Tsuyoshi, in turn, is one of only two people who retain memories of the previous selves of those killed by Piece. His direct encounters with the entity include being stabbed by its sword while shielding Asagi, and in the series finale he destroys Piece with his bare fists, an act that leads to the revelation of the truth behind Shibuya and the system that created it.
Piece's notable abilities include its capacity to manifest through nearly any nearby person, which makes its appearance unpredictable; its ability to mark targets with a crest on the back of the hand; its combat skill, which includes the use of a sword; and its capacity to return after being destroyed, since killing it merely causes it to revert to human form until it manifests again. It is also connected to the larger entity Whole, with both names drawn from the metaphor of a cake, indicating that Piece is only a fragment of a much vaster system.
