Description
Ema is one of the two central characters in the story, distinguished by her unique and pivotal role within the closed-off world of Shibuya. Unlike the other teenagers trapped in this virtual district, Ema possesses special powers that set her apart, making her the only person capable of directly confronting and temporarily defeating the enigmatic assassin known as Piece. This ability marks her as the primary protector of the other inhabitants, who are otherwise defenseless once they are marked for death.
Ema's background is twofold, encompassing her life within the constructed reality of Shibuya and a far darker origin in the real world. Within Shibuya, she has existed for a significant period, experiencing the cycle of death and reset that erases the memories and identities of her peers. This has left her as one of only two people who can remember those who have been killed and reborn with new names and personalities, the other being the protagonist Tsuyoshi. Her real-world counterpart is revealed to have been a deeply troubled and violent sociopath who committed a heinous crime, an act that paradoxically served as a catalyst for the creation of the virtual Shibuya as a form of rehabilitation for delinquent youth. After being accidentally left in a comatose state, her consciousness was transferred to the digital world, where she exists as the Ema encountered in the narrative.
The personality Ema displays in Shibuya is a direct result of her traumatic experiences. She is initially a withdrawn and isolated figure, having built emotional walls after repeatedly witnessing the people she knew being killed and then returning as strangers who do not remember her. This history has given her a cold and nihilistic outlook, believing that forming attachments is futile in a world where identity is so fragile and easily erased. Despite this hardened exterior, her actions are driven by a deep-seated hatred for Piece, who is responsible for the deaths of her loved ones, and a sense of purpose is rekindled through her connection with Tsuyoshi, whom she knew in a previous cycle as her lover, Revu.
Ema's role in the story is that of a guardian and a key to the mystery of Shibuya. She acts as a protector, using her powers to fight Piece and save those who have been marked, often at great personal risk. More than just a fighter, she is one of the few custodians of the true history of the world, possessing memories that have been wiped from everyone else. Her relationship with Tsuyoshi is the emotional core of the narrative. Initially hesitant to accept him due to his lost memories and changed personality, she gradually opens up, and together they form a partnership to uncover the truth and find an escape from Shibuya. Her most significant relationship is with Tsuyoshi, but she also had a past connection with one of the incarnations of another main character, Asagi, before that version of her was killed and reset.
Throughout the story, Ema undergoes significant development, transforming from a broken and isolated survivor into someone willing to hope and fight for a future. At the beginning, she is consumed by her tragic past and operates largely alone. Her interactions with Tsuyoshi, who persists in trying to reach her despite her coldness, gradually defrost her icy demeanor, allowing her to confess her love and re-engage emotionally with the world around her. By the climax, she finds the resolve to fully confront both Piece and her own traumatic memories of her real-world self, choosing to face reality no matter how painful it may be.
Ema's most notable ability is the power to Merge, which allows her to summon a suit of white, angelic powered armor. Only when wearing this armor does she possess the strength to fight and defeat Piece, who is otherwise seemingly invincible. In her armored state, she is a formidable combatant, matching Piece in speed and power, and her arsenal is eventually upgraded with an arm cannon. Despite her prowess, her abilities are not unlimited; her power has limits, and in the final arc, she requires assistance from the enigmatic Professor Ootomo, who enhances her capabilities.
