Description
Danaoshi is a powerful antagonist who appears in the latter half of the anime Humanoid Monster Bem, specifically from episode 18 onward, and serves as the primary adversary to the three main characters. When first encountered while consuming a human, Danaoshi introduces himself with the declaration, My name is Danaoshi, the one who rules over the darkness. His physical form is distinctly unsettling and inhuman; he has a humanoid shape but possesses a hollow torso, three main eyes supplemented by multiple compound eyes, and no visible neck. His head is connected to his torso by appendages resembling spider legs that grow from his cheeks, creating an indescribably eerie appearance.

Danaoshi is characterized by his cunning, manipulative nature, and strategic intellect. He does not rely solely on brute force but prefers to use deception and psychological warfare to achieve his goals. Upon meeting Bem, he acknowledges that the humanoid monster would be a formidable ally but a troublesome enemy, demonstrating his calculating approach. After being rejected, he investigates Bem's past, correctly deducing the reason Bem wishes to become human, and even shows Bem a vision of a world from before his birth in an attempt to sway him. When these efforts fail, he dedicates himself to eliminating Bem and his companions.

His primary motivation is maintaining his dominion over the darkness, and he views the humanoid monsters as obstacles to his power. To destroy them, he employs a variety of cruel and clever tactics. Rather than attacking directly, he often sends subordinate monsters to carry out his plans. A key strategy involves turning human society against Bem, Bera, and Bero. He orchestrates schemes where other monsters disguise themselves as the protagonists to attack innocent people, thereby inciting public fear and hatred toward them. This psychological torment proves to be a powerful weapon, as it isolates the already ostracized humanoid monsters and attacks their deepest desire to be accepted by humanity.

Danaoshi commands a range of lesser妖怪 (yōkai) who act as his agents. Among them are a succubus who manipulates dreams, a massive monster named Bogey Raven that functions as an entire haunted house, twin girl monsters named Nyx and Nyxie who capture humans and transfer their souls into balloons, and a doppelganger that traps people in mirrors and assumes the form of Bem and his friends to frame them. He is also indirectly responsible for the rampage of Oin Ejen, a forest spirit whom he manipulated into attacking the city by secretly enabling the human development that destroyed her woods. This act of provoking a crisis to exploit it for his own ends is typical of his character.

Danaoshi possesses a wide array of supernatural abilities, making him a versatile and dangerous opponent. He can transform his body into countless venomous spiders, which he uses for consumption, movement, spying, creating illusions, or taking hostages. In addition to this, he demonstrates psychic powers such as telekinesis, the ability to teleport, and the capacity to curse and kill victims through mysterious rituals. Despite being a monster, he also displays a surprising and sophisticated knowledge of human history, including concepts like genetic memory and the details of alchemy, which he explains to other characters.

The character undergoes a significant development, culminating in a major revelation in the final episodes. Throughout the latter part of the series, he operates under the disguised human identity of Tanashi Genrosai, a mysterious man who presents himself as a mystic seal master and offers to help the police hunt monsters. Tanashi is marked by a mole on his forehead and carries a ceremonial staff. In this form, Danaoshi infiltrates the police force, directly manipulating events to ensure that the public and authorities remain hostile to Bem and his companions. While this disguise initially has a playful and enigmatic personality, it grows increasingly ruthless and extreme, culminating in final acts such as attempting to burn the humanoid monsters alive in a sewer or blow them up along with a gas tank. This final plot twist reveals that the seemingly human ally of the police was the main monster all along, showcasing Danaoshi's ultimate deception and his role as a true master of shadows.
