Description
The Cursed Highschooler is not a single, named character but rather a collective role representing several teenage girls who become involved in black magic within the Tokyo Babylon 1999 anime. These girls are students who have been taught the fundamentals of onmyou magic by Tomokichi Kanayama, a retired exorcist formerly associated with the Sumeragi clan. Following Kanayama’s assassination, the girls take his magical textbook and begin independently practicing the dark arts they have learned.
Their primary motivation stems from feelings of being wronged and disenfranchised. These are broken-hearted and neglected teenagers who have experienced bullying and social isolation. They use magic as a means to gain power and take revenge on people they dislike, including a cunning teacher and troublesome boys, providing them with a sense of control and distinction in their otherwise difficult lives. They also come to believe they are chosen ones destined to play a significant role in the end of the world in 1999.
In the story's plot, the cursed highschoolers serve as antagonists whose reckless actions create a crisis for the protagonist, Subaru Sumeragi. Subaru attempts to stop their curses, fearing they will be harmed or will unleash dangerous demons due to their amateurish and unskilled handling of powerful magic. However, the girls misunderstand his intentions and believe he killed their teacher, leading them to direct a curse at Subaru himself. Their involvement threatens Subaru directly, and the situation eventually requires the intervention of the more powerful exorcist Seishirou Sakurazuka. Their main relationship is with Subaru as their misguided target and with Seishirou, who ultimately takes a more aggressive stance against their activities.
The development of these characters follows their descent from troubled students into dangerous magic users. Initially seeking revenge, they grow more confident in their abilities, convinced of their own importance. Their lack of understanding regarding the necessary payment or balance required for their spells ultimately leads to severe consequences, as they lose perspective on the weight of their actions. Regarding notable abilities, these girls are practitioners of black magic, capable of casting curses by calling specific telephone numbers and summoning spiritual forces. Despite their power, they are described as amateurs who do not fully comprehend the magic they wield, putting both themselves and others at great risk.
