Nozomi Akai is the wife of Toru Akai and the mother of their toddler son. She lives with her family in the apartment directly above Juzo Murasaki in a small tenement building. Before marriage, Nozomi was the leader of a female biker gang known as the Neko, and she met her husband through that underworld circle. Despite that past, she has settled into a domestic life and presents herself as a warm, friendly, and approachable woman. She makes a point of reaching out to Juzo, whom she sees as a lonely and withdrawn neighbor. She invites him into her home, offers him food, and encourages him to spend time with her young son. Her kindness stems from a genuine desire to help others, and she feels a particular sense of gratitude toward Juzo because he once tried to defend her when she was being harassed by thugs. This incident gave her a positive impression of him.

In the story, Nozomi functions as a tragic catalyst. Her efforts to befriend Juzo inadvertently trigger his traumatic memories and accelerate the emergence of his violent alternate personality, Number 13. She is unaware of Juzo’s past connection to her husband and of the revenge plot brewing beneath the surface. Her trusting nature makes her vulnerable, and she ultimately becomes one of Number 13’s victims, murdered in her own apartment. Her relationship with her husband is loving, though Toru keeps his history of bullying hidden from her. The loss of Nozomi and their son drives Toru to confront Juzo in a final, violent showdown.

Nozomi has no special abilities. Her defining traits are her kindness, her domestic devotion, and her background as a former gang leader, which hints at a tougher side that never fully resurfaces. She does not undergo any significant personal development; her role is largely that of an innocent who suffers the consequences of a cycle of bullying and revenge.
