Description
Choutarou Ohtori is a second-year student at Hyotei Academy and a regular member of its highly competitive tennis team. Standing at 185 cm tall with a slim build, he is one of the taller players among the middle school circuit, which contributes to the power of his playing style. He has silver-gray hair and brown eyes, and is often seen wearing a silver cross necklace, which he keeps as a good luck charm.
By nature, Choutarou is gentle, kind, and remarkably selfless. He is known for his polite and soft-spoken demeanor, treating his upperclassmen and teammates with great respect. He is a loyal and hardworking individual who is willing to spend hours perfecting a single skill if it will help his team succeed. While he normally appears calm and accommodating, he possesses a hidden stubborn streak and can become assertive when the situation calls for it, even standing up to senior players or his own captain. He is also quite emotional and is not afraid to show it, often being moved to tears. Choutarou tends to be a bit naive and idealistic, with a personal wish for world peace, yet he maintains a reserved side, valuing his personal space and feeling uncomfortable with people who are overly familiar too quickly.
Choutarou’s primary motivation is to support his team and his doubles partner. He does not play for personal glory but pours his spirit into every shot for the sake of bringing Hyotei closer to victory. This sense of duty is most famously displayed when he willingly offered to give up his own position as a regular player to his senior, Ryo Shishido, after witnessing Shishido’s desperate efforts to rejoin the team. This act of selflessness cemented their bond and set the course for his role on the team.
As a player, Choutarou is a serve-and-volley specialist who relies heavily on his powerful serves and quick net play. His signature technique is the Scud Serve, an extremely fast serve that initially topped out at 200 km/h. While devastating, this serve originally had a flaw in its accuracy, as Choutarou had a habit of twisting his wrist when aiming to the right side, making it predictable. Through intense training, he overcame this weakness and developed the Neo Scud Serve, which increased the speed to a record-breaking 215 km/h, becoming one of the fastest serves in the series. In doubles, he and Shishido are known as the "Silver Pair," and they developed a formation called the Pile Mirage, or Inducement Formation, specifically designed to counter the Australian Formation used by opponents like Seigaku's famed "Golden Pair."
Choutarou’s most significant relationship is with his doubles partner, Ryo Shishido. Their partnership is built on deep mutual respect, trust, and loyalty. He also shares a long-standing friendship with fellow second-year Wakashi Hiyoshi, having known him since elementary school. Outside of tennis, Choutarou comes from a wealthy family; his father is a lawyer. He has a refined hobby of playing the piano and violin and enjoys classical music, particularly Chopin. He is also known to have a perfect sense of pitch. After the retirement of the third-year students, Choutarou is appointed as the vice-captain of the Hyotei tennis club, a role that acknowledges his dedication and reliability.
