Description
Hikaru Amane is a supporting character in the sports series The Prince of Tennis. He is a second-year student at Rokkaku Middle School, where he is a regular member of the tennis team. He is widely known by the nickname David, a reference to Michelangelo's famous sculpture, owing to his classically handsome and well-proportioned, sculpted physique. His family consists of his parents, an older sister, and a cat named Tama. Outside of tennis, he serves on his school's student athletics committee and enjoys DIY carpentry and spending time at the beach.

Amane presents a striking contrast between his appearance and his personality. On the court, he has a cool, stoic, and serious demeanor, but he is famously known for his love of telling terrible puns, a habit he maintains even during intense matches. This love of wordplay is a core part of his identity; he has a daily routine of reciting twenty puns immediately after waking up and is estimated to make tens of thousands of puns per year. When delivering his puns, he maintains a completely deadpan expression, rarely laughing at his own jokes despite clearly enjoying them. He is so accustomed to receiving a physical reprimand from his regular doubles partner, Harukaze Kurobane, that he finds it strange and becomes disheartened when his jokes are ignored, as seen during the Junior Invitational Camp. Despite his comedic tendencies, Amane also acts as the team's counselor, showing a supportive and reliable side to his teammates.

As a tennis player, Hikaru Amane is an aggressive baseliner whose game is built on overwhelming power. He is right-handed and wields a custom-made, extra-long wooden racket crafted by his coach, which is just within regulation limits. His physical strength is considerable, demonstrated by his ability to return powerful shots, such as Takashi Kawamura's Hadokyu and Takeshi Momoshiro's Jack Knife, with only one hand. Before his official debut in the story, he built a reputation by defeating one hundred members of the Hyotei Academy tennis club in a practice match, albeit most were junior varsity players. Amane's most unorthodox ability is his Pun Warfare, where he uses a non-stop barrage of puns to mentally wear down his opponents, disrupting their focus and rhythm.

Amane's most significant relationship is with his doubles partner, Harukaze Kurobane. They form a manzai comedy duo-like partnership, with Amane as the strange man telling puns and Kurobane as the straight man who delivers the requisite slaps and retorts. They represent Rokkaku Middle School together in official tournaments. During the Kanto Tournament semifinals, they faced Seigaku's pair of Takashi Kawamura and Takeshi Momoshiro. Although Amane and Kurobane initially dominated the match with their power, they ultimately lost after falling victim to their opponents' tactical mind games. In an anime-exclusive arc at the Junior Invitational Camp, Amane was paired with Yushi Oshitari. Despite Oshitari's initial exasperation, their dynamic as a comedy duo proved successful, as they won their match against the pair of Shinji Ibu and Reiji Shinjo. Amane's character continues to develop in the sequel series, The New Prince of Tennis, where he is one of the fifty middle schoolers invited to the U-17 Japan National Team training camp. There, he is forced to compete in an elimination tie-break match against his own partner, Harukaze Kurobane, and emerges victorious to keep his place at the camp.
