Description
Akira Kamio is a second-year student at Fudomine Middle School, where he serves as the vice-captain of the tennis team. Known as the team's speed ace, he is one of the two pillars of the Fudomine tennis lineup alongside his long-time friend and teammate, Shinji Ibu. He is characterized by his reddish hair and a height of 165 centimeters, having graduated from North Fudomine Elementary School.
Kamio possesses a hot-headed and assertive personality. He is easily riled up, particularly by any unfavorable comments made about his school or his teammates, and has a tendency to provoke opponents before matches while also being quick to respond to their provocations. Despite this belligerent streak, he is fundamentally good-natured, incredibly hardworking, and has a strong sense of justice, hating any form of unfairness. His greatest driving force is a deep admiration for his captain, Kippei Tachibana. He holds an unshakable respect and faith in Tachibana, which helps him control his temper and follow orders as he never wants to disappoint his captain. This devotion extends to the captain's sister, An Tachibana, for whom Kamio has a noticeable crush, leading to jealousy regarding her interactions with other boys, particularly Takeshi Momoshiro of Seishun Academy.
In his role within the story, Kamio is a key regular for Fudomine, typically playing in singles or doubles matches. His personal journey is defined by a significant loss and subsequent growth. During the Tokyo District Tournament finals against Seishun Academy, he faced Kaoru Kaido. Although his superior speed initially gave him the advantage and allowed him to easily counter Kaido's Snake shot, Kamio exhausted himself by constantly raising the game's pace and ultimately lost to Kaido's superior stamina and perseverance. This heartbreaking defeat became a catalyst for him to train even harder. He got his chance for redemption at the Kanto Tournament in a crucial singles match against Yamabuki Middle School's ace, Kiyosumi Sengoku. After being shut down by Sengoku's motion vision, Kamio, inspired by Kaido's conviction, pushed past his own physical limits and developed a new technique, the Sonic Bullet, to secure victory and earn his team a spot in the National Tournament.
Kamio's playing style is defined by his exceptional footwork and focus on rhythm. His entire game is built around controlling the tempo, a trait reflected in his hobby of collecting rhythmic music and his habit of using phrases like "get into the rhythm" as a self-motivator. His most notable ability is his incredible speed, allowing him to chase down any ball. He developed the Sonic Bullet, a technique where he uses his speed to run at full force and hit a heavy slice shot that skids low across the court after it bounces. He also utilizes a quick serve performed before the ball reaches its apex. Despite his speed, his physical stamina is a noted weakness that opponents have exploited.
Kamio maintains several key relationships within the series. He shares a strong, if one-sided, rivalry with Seishun's Momoshiro, which began when Momoshiro borrowed Kamio's bicycle without permission while chasing a thief, leading to an impromptu race and a tense dynamic between them. He also has a significant connection with his teammate Ibu, with whom he often plays doubles and pairs up during the U-17 training camp. Throughout the series, Kamio shows a relentless desire to improve, not just for personal glory but to ensure he does not hold back his captain, Tachibana, from achieving greater heights.
