Description
Hotaru Shiraishi is a central character in the story, a young girl who acts as a crucial link between the living world and the supernatural events at the core of the narrative. She is an elementary school student, specifically in the fifth grade, and is portrayed as the smallest and one of the quietest children in her class.

Her background reveals a somewhat solitary home life. Hotaru is the daughter of a single, working mother who runs an eccentric store and is often busy, leaving Hotaru frequently alone at home. Her father has passed away. Seeking companionship, she shares a deep bond with her pet cat, a longhaired siamese named Lulu, who has been her best friend since Hotaru was born. The story's inciting incident for Hotaru occurs just before the start of her fifth-grade year when she is hit by a car while searching for Lulu, who had gone missing. This accident results in her spending three weeks in the hospital.

In terms of personality, Hotaru is initially described as very quiet, to the point where any unusual behavior from her is immediately noticed by others. Despite her reserved nature, she possesses a core of kindness, gentleness, and considerable courage. This courage becomes evident as she fearlessly investigates the mystery of a ghostly young woman she discovers, a girl her friends nickname Eve. Her motivations are driven by a sense of compassion and a strong sense of justice; upon meeting Eve and realizing the ghost is trapped, confused, and searching for someone named Adam, Hotaru becomes determined to help her recover her lost memories and resolve her unfinished business.

Hotaru's role in the story is that of a protagonist and a bridge between two worlds. While in a coma from her own accident, her spirit wandered and met the spirit of Mizuki Mochizuki, a high school girl also in a coma after being struck by a car. After waking, Hotaru finds Mizuki's ghost trapped in an abandoned mansion, unable to leave and invisible to everyone else. Hotaru is the only person who can see and communicate with her. Along with her best friend Sae Kayama and classmates Tetsu Sugisaki and Masaki Miura, Hotaru leads the investigation into Eve's identity and the circumstances that led to her condition. Her efforts are pivotal, as her determination to help Eve directly leads to the resolution of the central conflict, ultimately giving the trapped spirit the resolve to live and allow the comatose girl to awaken.

Key relationships shape Hotaru's world. Her best friend is Sae Kayama, who is part of the group helping with the investigation. The other two boys in her group are her classmates, Tetsu Sugisaki and Masaki Miura. Tetsu is the son of the doctor who treated Hotaru at the hospital, and he becomes her classmate and sits next to her when the school year begins. Hotaru's feelings evolve over the course of the story. Initially, she has a crush on Masaki Miura. However, as she gets to know both boys better through their shared adventure, she finds herself developing stronger feelings for Tetsu Sugisaki instead. Her relationship with her mother, though distant due to the mother's work, is present, and Hotaru's hospitalization and subsequent actions are a concern for her family.

Hotaru shows notable development as the story progresses. She begins as a lonely child, quietly navigating her everyday life. The extraordinary situation she stumbles into forces her to take on a leadership role, showing initiative, bravery, and deductive reasoning as she and her friends piece together the truth about Eve and Adam. Her journey is not only about solving a mystery but also involves personal growth in her friendships and her understanding of love and sacrifice, culminating in her being the one to deliver the final, convincing plea that saves Eve. She does not possess any supernatural abilities herself, but her unique experience of having her spirit leave her body during her coma allows her to perceive and interact with the spirit world, making her the sole communicator with the ghost Eve. Her regular interests include taking piano lessons, though she finds her practice music boring and prefers watching music on MTV.
