Description
Himeko Jōgasaki is a classmate of Maruko in the third grade, belonging to class 3-4. She made her first appearance in the thirteenth volume of the original manga. As a character who was originally created for a different manga titled Nagasawa-kun, she was later brought into the world of Chibi Maruko-chan, receiving a redesign for her younger incarnation in this series.

In terms of background, Himeko comes from a wealthy and privileged family, though her household is not depicted as being as extraordinarily affluent as that of her classmate Kazuhiko Hanawa. She lives in a lovely home with a beautiful mother and a wonderful father. Her upbringing affords her certain refinements; she has been shown playing the violin while accompanied by her father on the piano and has traveled to places like Guam during spring vacation. Her signature hairstyle consists of elegant curled twin-tail rolls, which are actually a result of naturally curly hair that requires a significant amount of time, reportedly three hours, to set.

Himeko’s personality is marked by a combination of confidence, competitiveness, and a fundamental sense of fairness. She is recognized as one of the most beautiful girls in her class and carries herself with a degree of pride befitting her status as a young lady from a good family, yet she does not act in a haughty or off-putting manner. Instead, she is described as being friendly and getting along well with most of the other girls, displaying leadership qualities, particularly in her friendship with the more timid Yumiko Sasayama. She is outspoken and strong-willed, not hesitating to speak her mind or stand up for herself, which often leads to conflicts with the boys in her class. Her athletic abilities are also notable; she possesses excellent motor skills and has demonstrated surprising prowess in sports, such as throwing a fastball in dodgeball that inadvertently struck Maruko in the face.

Her motivations and role in the story are primarily centered on navigating the social dynamics of her classroom and her personal rivalries. Unlike many of her female classmates, a significant portion of her screen time involves interactions with a specific male student. Her most defining and developed relationship is her contentious, often explosive rivalry with Kimio Nagasawa. Their arguments are famously zero-percent heartwarming, involving a level of mutual verbal opposition that seems remarkably intense for third-graders. The hostility is so pronounced that even Himeko's pet dog, Besu, is known to bark at Nagasawa. This turbulent relationship stands in stark contrast to her otherwise amicable disposition.

However, this relationship demonstrates notable development over the course of the series. While initially characterized by pure antagonism, the dynamic between Himeko and Nagasawa gradually evolves into what could be described as a classic tsundere pattern, shifting from a constant state of conflict to occasionally showing a softer, more caring side. In a pivotal episode concerning a class trip photo, Nagasawa secretly ordered a copy of a picture in which they were both laughing together. Upon learning that his family’s photo albums were destroyed in a fire—the source of his trauma—Himeko softened her stance, offered him her handkerchief, and decided to order the same photograph herself. In another episode, despite Nagasawa’s pride preventing him from accepting charity, she tried to give him a toy piano for his younger brother, Taro, after learning about his family’s financial struggles. This act was accompanied by an internal confession that she had started to think better of him. These episodes highlight a growing mutual respect and unspoken connection, showing a significant departure from their earlier, purely hostile interactions.

Her other key relationships include a well-documented and intense animosity with the narcissistic class representative, Hanako Migiwa. While the source of this enmity is often attributed to Migiwa's jealousy, it is noted that Migiwa hates Himeko the most among her classmates. Himeko's relationship with her wealthy classmate Hanawa is less defined, though she has participated in activities like forming a tennis research club with him.

Beyond her academic and athletic abilities, her notable talents include playing the violin. Her dream for the future is to become a flight attendant so she can travel to many different countries. In summary, Himeko Jōgasaki is a proud, talented, and spirited young girl whose initial haughty exterior hides a capacity for kindness and growth, primarily revealed through her complex and evolving relationship with her primary rival, Nagasawa.
