Description
Momoko's Grandmother is an elderly woman living in the rural town of Shimotsuma, where she provides the family home after Momoko and her father are forced to relocate following the father's legal troubles involving counterfeit merchandise. She is the mother of Momoko's father and the maternal grandmother of Momoko. Her background is deeply rooted in traditional rural life, which stands in quiet contrast to Momoko's obsession with Rococo-era France and Lolita fashion. In personality, she is sharp-tongued and pragmatic, often more observant and grounded than her son, the bumbling former yakuza. She possesses a dry, no-nonsense manner and does not indulge in the chaos that surrounds her family, instead watching events with clear-eyed practicality. Her motivations center on protecting her family when needed, though she does not express this sentimentality openly; she acts out of a sense of duty and capability when the situation demands it. In the story, she serves as a consistent supporting figure whose household becomes the central setting for Momoko's daily life. She also provides a bridge between the eccentric world of her granddaughter and the conventional rural community of Shimotsuma. Her key relationships include her granddaughter Momoko, with whom she shares a quiet coexistence marked by mutual tolerance rather than overt affection, and her son, whose failures and comedic antics she observes with resigned pragmatism. She does not undergo significant character development over the course of the narrative; rather, her hidden qualities are gradually revealed as the plot progresses. Her most notable ability is her surprising physical competence: she possesses martial arts skills that emerge during a pivotal confrontation, and her agility defies expectations for someone of her age. In the climax, she actively aids Momoko and Ichigo during their conflict with the rival biker gang, contributing to their escape by allowing her scooter to be used as a makeshift weapon. Her scooter itself plays a key role in the story's final act, as Momoko hurls it at the pursuing gang members, causing them to flee. Ultimately, Momoko's Grandmother functions as an unassuming yet capable elder whose hidden strengths and practical mindset become crucial when her family is threatened.
