Live action TV
Description
Miles Lancaster is a supporting human character in the 2007 live-action Transformers film, where he serves as Sam Witwicky's best friend and classmate. He attends the same high school as Sam and shares classes with Mikaela Banes and her then-boyfriend Trent DeMarco. Miles holds a somewhat cynical view of the school social hierarchy, referring to Mikaela as a jock concubine because he and Sam have been on the receiving end of Trent's bullying.
His personality is defined by an offbeat, occasionally awkward sense of humor and a steadfast loyalty to his friendship with Sam. He subscribes to the principle of bros before hoes and is not shy about expressing his opinions, even when they create awkward situations. Miles has a tendency to behave in ways that others find strange, such as climbing trees and hanging upside-down in an attempt to appear cool or impress girls. This behavior frequently embarrasses Sam and contributes to his reputation as something of a weirdo.
Miles's motivations are largely driven by teenage social ambitions and a desire to maintain his close friendship with Sam. He often tags along on Sam's excursions, including a trip to the lake where Sam hopes to impress Mikaela with his new car. During that outing, Miles climbs a tree and hangs upside-down, much to Sam's annoyance. When Sam later tries to offer Mikaela a ride home alone, Miles initially refuses to leave the car, and his suggested solution of putting her in the backseat does not satisfy Sam's need for privacy. Despite these lapses in social awareness, Miles genuinely values his friendship and sticks by Sam through the early strangeness surrounding the Camaro, though he is skeptical when Sam calls to report his car stalking him.
Miles takes on the role of an informal advisor to Sam on several occasions. When Sam discovers his great-grandfather's heirlooms and hopes they might be valuable, Miles evaluates them and frankly declares them next to worthless, recommending an online auction instead. He also reasons with Sam about the impracticality of selling the items before obtaining a driver's license, effectively convincing him to wait. This shows that beneath his quirky exterior, Miles possesses a practical, grounded perspective and can offer sensible advice when needed.
His key relationships center almost entirely on Sam, with whom he shares a long-standing friendship built on shared experiences and mutual support. By contrast, his interactions with Mikaela are strained from the outset, partly because of his dismissive attitude toward her and partly because he tends to behave inappropriately around her friend Lindsey. On one occasion, when Sam drives Mikaela and Lindsey to a movie, Sam explicitly warns Miles not to perv out on Lindsey, but Miles still manages to upset Mikaela, suggesting that his social missteps cause friction within the group. He also has an antagonistic dynamic with Trent DeMarco, the school bully, which reinforces his identification with Sam as an underdog.
Over the course of the first film, Miles experiences limited development as a character. He remains a relatively static presence whose primary function is to provide comic relief and a human touchstone for Sam. By the time of the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Sam and Miles have grown apart, and Miles does not appear, marking the end of his role in the story.
Miles does not possess any special abilities or skills relevant to the larger conflict with the Transformers. His significance lies entirely in his ordinary humanity and his role as Sam's friend, offering a contrast to the extraordinary events unfolding around him. His lack of awareness about the alien activity on Earth underscores the normal teenage life that Sam is gradually pulled away from. While his surname is not spoken in the film, it is provided in the official novelization. In earlier drafts of the script, his last name was given as McCullough.
