Description
First Sergeant Patrick Donnelly, often referred to as Donnelly, is a human character from the Transformers film series. He serves as a member of Captain William Lennox's United States Army Ranger unit, stationed at the SOCCENT Forward Operations Base in Qatar. As the highest-ranking enlisted man in the unit, his position is known as the top kick.

Donnelly is characterized as a smart-mouthed Bostonian who brings a distinct personality to the military team. Despite holding a senior non-commissioned officer rank that would typically demand strong leadership and a steadying presence, Donnelly is instead known for his pessimistic outlook, often expressing the belief that the group is doomed to die in their dire circumstances. This blend of cynicism and dark humor defines much of his interaction with his comrades. In quieter moments, however, he reveals a more relatable, homesick side, expressing a desire for simple pleasures like enjoying a flat beer and a cold hot dog while watching a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

His primary role in the story is as a member of Lennox's elite team that survives the initial Decepticon attack on the SOCCENT base in Qatar. When the team first encounters a transforming robot, Donnelly displays a skeptical and grounded nature, dismissing Sergeant Robert Epps's theory about an invisible force field as fantasy that belongs only in comic books. He also reacts with sarcasm when another soldier, Figueroa, claims to possess a gift of premonition, telling him to use his voodoo powers to get them home. These reactions establish him as a man of the mundane world, wholly unprepared for the science-fiction reality of the Transformers.

In terms of key relationships, Donnelly is part of the close-knit Ranger squad under Captain Lennox's command. He interacts most frequently with his fellow soldiers, including Sergeant Epps and Figueroa, sharing their hardships and engaging in their banter. His role is that of a seasoned, cynical peer rather than a direct subordinate or leader.

Donnelly does not undergo a significant character development arc, largely due to his abrupt and fatal encounter with the Decepticon known as Scorponok. During the team's trek through the desert toward a local village, the giant mechanical scorpion attacks. After a brief firefight, Scorponok ambushes Donnelly from behind, impaling him on its tail before dragging the screaming sergeant beneath the sand. His death is permanent, and he does not reappear later in the story. The IDW comic book adaptation of the film depicts an even more graphic end, showing Scorponok depositing Donnelly's bloody corpse on the sand after killing him.

As a human soldier, Donnelly possesses no superhuman or robotic abilities. His notable skills are those of a trained United States Army Ranger, including proficiency with standard-issue firearms and the physical stamina required for combat operations in a desert environment. However, these abilities prove utterly ineffective against the advanced alien technology of the Decepticons, as his weapons cannot harm Scorponok.
