Description
Agent Seymour Simmons serves as the chief field agent for Sector Seven, a secret government organization dedicated to studying and containing the alien robots known as Transformers. His deep involvement with the group is a family tradition, as his great-grandfather was part of the original team that discovered the frozen Decepticon leader Megatron in the Arctic. This legacy instilled in him a fierce, often abrasive patriotism; he may come across as a jerk, but he takes his work very personally, viewing it as his familial duty.
His personality is a blend of intense paranoia and eccentric behavior. Described as being a smidge off his nut, he is strange, intense, and known for wearing unusual attire like Hawaiian underwear under his suit. His interrogation tactics are aggressive, and he initially displays a stubborn refusal to cooperate with the Autobots or civilians like Sam Witwicky, whom he blames for the shutdown of Sector Seven following the events of the first major battle in Mission City. Following the dissolution of Sector Seven, Simmons is forced to work in his mother's deli in New York City, a humbling experience that fuels his bitterness. However, he secretly maintains his obsession by running a website called GiantEffingRobots.com under the alias Robo-Warrior.
Despite his grudge, Simmons is motivated by a deep-seated need to protect Earth and to prove that his life's work was not an obsession but a vital mission. When Sam Witwicky seeks his help to decipher ancient Cyberglyphics, Simmons initially refuses but relents when he realizes the symbols are key to a larger threat. His role evolves from an antagonist to a crucial ally, providing the classified files he stole from Sector Seven that reveal the Transformers have visited Earth for centuries. He uses his intelligence and survival skills to navigate international borders, decode ancient clues, and even assist in resurrecting Optimus Prime.
His key relationships are marked by this evolution. He begins as a tormentor to Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes, threatening them with imprisonment, but later becomes a trusted, if sarcastic, ally. He forms an unlikely partnership with the conspiracy theorist Leo Spitz, whom he frequently berates and tases, yet works alongside to save the world. He maintains a professional, grudging respect for military leaders like William Lennox and Robert Epps. Later, he employs a personal assistant named Dutch, a former NSA cyber-sleuth, and it is hinted that he had a past romantic relationship with Director Charlotte Mearing.
Over the course of his story, Simmons undergoes significant development. He transforms from a secretive government agent who views the Transformers solely as assets or threats into a public defender of the Autobots. After his heroics in Egypt, where he climbed the Great Pyramid to call in a naval strike on the Decepticon Devastator, he writes a successful book about his experiences, becoming wealthy and living in luxury. He sheds his anonymity, publicly defending the Autobots on television and willingly rejoining the fight when humanity is endangered, even at the risk of relapsing into his addiction to the alien conflict. His abilities are not superhuman but are notable for his extensive knowledge of classified alien history, his tactical cunning, his skill at interrogation and evasion, and a willingness to take extreme, physical action, such as tasing security guards or climbing ancient monuments while under fire.
