Live action TV
Description
Dr Shinigami appears in the 2005 live-action film Kamen Rider The First, not an anime. He is presented as a senior executive within the terrorist organization Shocker. In this film, he holds the title of Shocker Staff: Elderly Gentleman, portrayed through archived footage of actor Hideyo Amamoto, which was overdubbed for the production.

The character operates as a mysterious and shadowy figure who appears to his subordinates only via satellite on screens within Shocker's headquarters, with his physical location remaining unknown. His visual presentation emphasizes an air of sinister authority through his long black and red cape and vampire-like fangs. As a high-ranking commander, he is involved in the organization's most critical decisions regarding their cyborg soldier program.

Within the film's narrative, Dr Shinigami is present from the very beginning, a departure from the original television series where he appeared later. He oversees the activities of Shocker's cyborg soldiers, including the Bat who initially abducts Takeshi Hongo, and later issues orders directly to Hongo when he serves Shocker as the soldier designated Hopper. Dr Shinigami gives Hongo the mission to eliminate witnesses who have seen Shocker's inhumanoid soldiers, a task that ultimately leads to Hongo rediscovering his humanity.

When Hongo betrays Shocker, Dr Shinigami authorizes the creation of a second cyborg soldier based on the same design, ordering the development of Hopper 2 to eliminate the original. This decision drives much of the central conflict between the two Riders. Throughout the film, he maintains a cold and calculating demeanor, representing the strategic and scientific leadership of Shocker.

Unlike his counterpart in the original 1970s television series, this version of Dr Shinigami does not transform into a squid monster known as Ika Devil. He remains in his humanoid commander form throughout Kamen Rider The First. He survives the events of the film, escaping the destruction of Shocker's island base along with other major agents, already planning new operations against the Kamen Riders. His primary abilities appear to be his scientific expertise in cyborg creation, his strategic command over Shocker operations, and his authority over the organization's inhumanoid soldiers.

Dr Shinigami's background from the original series depicts him as a half-Japanese, half-Russian genius scientist named Ivan Tawanovitch who earned a doctorate and worked with the Nazis during World War II on replacement bodies for the dying, seeking to save his ill sister, before eventually joining Shocker. However, this extensive backstory is not directly depicted within the events of Kamen Rider The First itself, which presents him primarily as an enigmatic and existing leader within the organization.
