Description
Chief Golgo is the comedic stage persona of the Japanese comedian Masahiko Matsumoto, who served as a central co-host for the long-running television programs Pokémon Sunday and its successor, Pokémon Smash, until 2013. The name Golgo is a deliberate reference to Golgo 13, a long-running manga about a professional assassin, a choice the comedian made early in his career when he was writing fan fiction for that series.

Physically, Chief Golgo is recognized by his distinctive appearance, which includes a bald head and a finely trimmed mustache. His most iconic article of clothing is an outlandish white-and-gold Pokéball patterned suit, a costume that complements his energetic and larger-than-life television presence.

In terms of personality, Chief Golgo is portrayed as a boisterous and enthusiastic figure, well-suited for hosting a children's variety show focused on Pokémon. While his persona is primarily comedic, the character also possesses a vein of unexpected competence, particularly in the context of Pokémon battles. This duality is a key aspect of his role on the show, where he would often participate in battles that were both entertaining and showcased legitimate strategic play.

Chief Golgo's primary role in the story of Pokémon Sunday is as its de facto leader and titular "Chief." He guided the program's segments, which included battles, skits, and Pokémon news. A significant part of his narrative involved his own Pokémon team. One of his most famous partners is an Octillery, affectionately nicknamed by fans as "Golgotillery." This particular Octillery, caught by Golgo in his own Pokémon Diamond or Pearl game, became a cult hero for its dramatic battling style. Golgo equipped it with a Focus Band, an item that gives the holder a small chance of surviving a fatal attack. This Octillery would repeatedly defy the odds by activating the Focus Band, surviving blows it should not have and turning the tide of battles in spectacular fashion. Its moveset included signature moves like Octazooka, Ice Beam, and Hyper Beam. Another one of his signature Pokémon is a Sableye, which was later distributed as an event Pokémon to commemorate the nine-year run of the program.

His key relationships on the show were with his co-hosts, including the personality often referred to as "Shoko-tan," as well as various guests from the Pokémon Company, such as game developer Junichi Masuda, whom he battled on the program. His role as a battling host was so prominent that his personal game save file, including his female Trainer character named "Goruko," became a point of trivia for viewers.

While his character is primarily static as the confident and skilled Chief, his development is reflected in the internal lore of the show itself, notably through his association with Octillery. The octopus Pokémon's string of improbable victories and its status as a "clutch" performer added depth to his character as a trainer who could bring out hidden potential in his Pokémon through clever strategy and a bit of luck. His presence was so consistent that he became "practically part of the furniture" of the show's run, transitioning seamlessly from Pokémon Sunday to Pokémon Smash until his tenure ended in 2013.
