Description
Maruyama Chie is a journalist from Toyo Television who arrives in the town of Kurouzu-cho alongside her colleagues, Mr. Endo and Mr. Sakagami, to investigate a series of unusual typhoons affecting the area. Shortly after entering the town, the spiral curse causes their vehicle to overturn, leaving Chie as the sole survivor of the accident. Her background as a reporter drives her initial motivation to document the bizarre events, but as the curse intensifies and traps her in the town, her goals shift toward survival and understanding the nature of the spiral phenomenon.
Personality-wise, Chie is portrayed as level-headed, observant, and resourceful. She takes on a more active investigative role after Shuichi Saito becomes catatonic from the trauma he has endured. In the story, she assumes the role of deuteragonist from chapter fourteen onward, working alongside Kirie Goshima to navigate the escalating horrors. Her key relationship is with Kirie, whom she supports as a close ally and friend during the breakdown of the town. Chie does not possess any supernatural abilities; her strengths lie in her determination, journalistic instincts, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
Her development traces a trajectory from an outsider reporting on a story to a trapped survivor forced to confront the overwhelming, inescapable nature of the spiral curse. Eventually, she succumbs to the curse like many others in Kurouzu-cho, meeting her end as the spiral's influence consumes the town entirely.
