Description
Hideyoshi Tanaka is the main protagonist of Buzzer Beater, a boisterous and highly skilled young basketball player. At the start of the story, he is a fourteen or fifteen-year-old orphan living on the streets, having survived by hustling adult players in street basketball games for money using his phenomenal natural talents. Despite his short stature, he is capable of performing dunks, which contributed to his reputation on the streets. He is selected to join the Earth All-Star team, wearing jersey number one and playing as a point guard, due to his extraordinary speed and superhuman jumping ability.

Hideyoshi possesses a very cocky and confident personality, a trait born from his experiences as the best player on the streets. He is known to be quite energetic and loud, with friends calling him by the nickname Tono. Regardless of his natural gifts, he is deeply dedicated to basketball and constantly strives to improve himself, always aiming to become better even when he is already one of the best players on his team. He dreams of playing in the Galactic League after seeing an advertisement, which sets the stage for his involvement with the Earth team.

Throughout the story, Hideyoshi experiences a significant physical and personal development. He is prone to sudden, paralyzing migraines that occur during practice or games. It is eventually revealed by his teammate DT that these headaches are actually symptoms of him growing horns, indicating that he is half-Goran, an alien race. This is the same condition DT himself experienced in his youth. This discovery ties directly into the mystery of his origins, as he is an orphan with unknown parents. His only memento from them is a wristband made of a unique elastic material that can only be found on the planet Goru, the homeworld of the Gorans. In the final parts of the series, it is revealed by a character named Gyuma that Hideyoshi's father is Shogun, one of the creators of the Intergalactic League.

Hideyoshi's key relationships on the team are central to his growth. He shares a friendly rivalry with DT, who is considered Earth's best point guard and the captain of the team. Their dynamic is often compared to that of rival players from other sports stories, pushing each other to higher levels of performance. He also holds a strong connection to his past through a man named Olivier, a former Intergalactic League player who taught Hideyoshi how to play basketball and gave him his shoes.
