Description
Dr. M2 is the main antagonist of the film Zatch Bell: Attack of Mechavulcan. He is a mamodo, a demon, who comes from a future time period, specifically sometime after the battle to decide the next ruler of the Demon World has concluded. Dr. M2 identifies himself as a scientist who specializes in a field he calls Magical Science, and he claims to be the only mamodo conducting research in this area. His scientific pursuits have led him to create a time machine, which he uses to travel to the past during the events of the main story.
As a character, Dr. M2 is portrayed as jolly and energetic, a stark contrast to the typical brooding antagonist. Despite his cheerful demeanor, he is driven by a profound self-interest. The person he loves and prioritizes above all others is himself. His primary interest outside of his own work is in the human genius Kiyomaro Takamine, the creator of the original Vulcan toy. Dr. M2 is desperate to secure Kiyomaro as his partner, believing him to be the key to perfecting his creations. He has no interest in anyone else and is entirely dismissive of the mamodo battle to decide the king, finding it irrelevant to his goals. While he is careful to avoid killing Kiyomaro, whom he needs, he shows no hesitation in threatening or attempting to eliminate anyone who gets in his way, including Kiyomaro's friends.
Dr. M2's primary motivation is to recruit Kiyomaro to be his partner and bring him to the future. He has somehow acquired a relic from the future, a prototype robotic version of Volcan 300 that a future version of Kiyomaro built for Zatch. However, this prototype is incomplete and full of bugs. Dr. M2 realized that the best way to fix his own army of robots, which he calls the Death Mechanics, was to have the original creator, Kiyomaro, repair them. He abducts Kiyomaro and offers to take him to the future, insisting that the people of Kiyomaro's present time are imbeciles who cannot understand his genius.
In the story, Dr. M2 serves as the central villain who drives the plot forward. He first appears rallying his army of robots, the Death Mechanics, which are all giant, blue, robotic copies of Vulcan. He orders one unit, Death 18, to kidnap Kiyomaro. Once Kiyomaro is captured and contained in his floating laboratory, Dr. M2 reveals his plan. He shows Kiyomaro a model of his future self's imperfect robot to prove his point, and repeatedly asks the boy to be his partner, only to be refused each time. As the story progresses, Dr. M2's plan begins to unravel when his own creation, Death 18, develops a friendship with Zatch and disobeys its orders. Infuriated by this betrayal, Dr. M2 uses his control over the other Death Mechanics to attack. When his forces are threatened, he combines all the Death Mechanics, including a reprogrammed Death 18, into a single, colossal Vulcan to eliminate his enemies.
His key relationships are primarily functional. His relationship with Kiyomaro is one of obsession, viewing him not as a person but as a tool or the perfect partner to advance his scientific ambitions. He creates the entire Death Mechanics army, viewing them as extensions of his will. The most significant relationship is with the robot Death 18, which he creates and orders to deceive Zatch. When Death 18 develops autonomy and friendship, Dr. M2 is deeply angered by what he sees as a malfunction and betrayal, leading him to forcibly reassert his control over it.
Throughout the film, Dr. M2 does not undergo a significant personal transformation like a protagonist. His development is more in how his plan is thwarted. He begins as a confident, controlling mastermind, but as his robots are defeated and his plans fail, his desperation becomes more apparent. At the climax, after the heroes combine their power to close the time-space hole his actions created, Dr. M2 is last seen holding the prototype Vulcan in his lap. In this moment, he quietly wonders to himself if the transmission element of friendship that Zatch and Kiyomaro used can guide even himself, hinting at a moment of introspection before his fate becomes unknown as he returns to the future.
Dr. M2 possesses several notable abilities stemming from his mastery of Magical Science. His most prominent ability is his genius for creating magical technology. He built a time machine capable of transporting him to the past, though it requires seven hours to charge. He also developed an army of thousands of robotic Mechavulcans, known as the Death Mechanics, which are armed with missiles and have the ability to combine into a single, giant, powerful mech. Apart from his technological prowess, Dr. M2 has a natural mamodo ability that allows him to stretch his arms to great lengths, similar to a spell cast by another mamodo, though this is not a spell but an innate physical trait. Whether he possesses any other spell-based abilities remains unknown.
