Description
The 4th generation Vulcan, also known as DS18 or the 4th Generation Vulcan 300, is a significant supporting character from the second film, Zatch Bell: Attack of Mechavulcan. This character is a unique robotic unit within the DS Mecha series, designated as the 18th unit of the DS Corps. Its origin lies in the future Mamodo world, where it was created by the mad scientist Dr. M2. The scientist traveled back in time to the human world, bringing his army of mechs with him to achieve his goals.

Initially, the 4th generation Vulcan is sent on a mission to capture Kiyo Takamine and deliver him to Dr. M2's floating castle. After successfully kidnapping Kiyo, the robot is ordered to keep the young mamodo Zatch Bell occupied and distracted. In carrying out this task, DS18 first reveals a more complex nature. It saves Zatch from the troublesome human girl Naomi and, using its built-in repair equipment, fixes Zatch's beloved but battered 3rd Generation Vulcan toy, returning it to him. Zatch, misunderstanding the situation, believes Kiyo built this impressive giant robot for him and begins playing with it around town.

The robot's personality is not initially its own but a function of its programming. It is designed to follow its creator's commands without question. However, as it spends time with Zatch and his friends, a significant change occurs. The 4th generation Vulcan begins to learn from its interactions, and its programming slowly starts to change, developing a sense of friendship. A key moment demonstrating this budding personality is when it gives Tia a flower as a gesture of trust, allowing Zatch and his friends to ride inside it.

Its central motivation shifts over the course of the film. While its original purpose is to serve Dr. M2, its growing bond with Zatch creates an internal conflict. This culminates during the final battle when the entire DS Corps, including DS18, magically fuses together to form a gigantic, titan-sized mechavulcan. Despite being part of this collective, the 4th generation Vulcan demonstrates its free will and loyalty to its new friends. It defies the collective's orders, breaking its own hand—and itself—away from the combined form to protect Zatch and the others from the other DS Mecha units.

The 4th generation Vulcan's most notable act of development and sacrifice comes at the film's climax. After Zatch and his friends destroy the unstable nuclear core of Dr. M2's operation, they need immense energy to reactivate the reactor and send the scientist back to the future. The 4th generation Vulcan willingly sacrifices itself, giving its own energy to Zatch's most powerful spell, the Baou Zakeruga, to provide the necessary power. Following this sacrifice, the remaining DS Mecha units disappear into the sky.

In terms of abilities, as a member of the DS Mecha series, the 4th generation Vulcan is equipped with built-in anti-air missiles that can be deployed from launchers inside its mouth, which also serves as a cockpit. Its most remarkable power is its role in the collective ability of the DS Corps, which can magically merge and combine their individual forms into one colossal, city-destroying mechavulcan. Beyond these combat capabilities, its hands are also shown to contain sophisticated repair equipment, capable of fixing other mechanical objects. Its ultimate legacy is not just its arsenal, but its demonstration that a machine built for combat could learn friendship and make the ultimate sacrifice for it.
