Description
Alita’s entry into the world of Motorball marks a significant turning point in her life, serving as both an escape from personal tragedy and a new arena in which to test her formidable combat skills. Following the death of Yugo, a grieving and emotionally shattered Alita runs away from the home of her father figure, Daisuke Ido. She is discovered in a bar by a former Top League player named Esdoc, who recognizes her potential and convinces her to channel her pain and rage into the brutal, high-speed sport, signing her to a twelve-race contract. This period represents a conscious decision to bury her past and lose herself in the relentless competition of the circuit.

Within the world of the Scrapyard, Motorball is the most popular and dangerous sport, a gladiatorial race where cyborg competitors battle with sharpened weapons and immense speed to carry a ball across a finish line. For Alita, Motorball is more than just a game; it is a crucible. The intense pressure and life-threatening danger of the races trigger memory fragments of her forgotten past as a Martian warrior, making her pursuit of victory a quest for her own lost identity. She quickly rises through the ranks of the Third League, becoming a celebrated and feared player known for her unparalleled skill. Her new life is supported by a mechanic named Ed, who forges for her the legendary Damascus Blade, a weapon that becomes intrinsically linked to her fighting spirit.

Alita’s personality during her Motorball career is defined by a cold, focused detachment. She deliberately severs ties with her former life, pointedly ignoring Ido when he discovers her at the track, her stare a clear message that she has chosen a different path. This period showcases her raw, almost instinctive love for battle and her relentless drive to push herself to the limit. Her motivations are complex: she seeks the rush of combat that allows her to feel alive and access her hidden memories, while also punishing herself for the losses she has endured. The apex of her Motorball journey is her final and greatest match against Jashugan, the undefeated Top League champion. In a battle that pushes both to their physical and spiritual limits, Alita is defeated but earns the champion’s respect and survives, becoming the new champion by default.

Her key relationships during this time are more functional than emotional. She is managed by Esdoc and cared for by her mechanic Ed, who becomes a crucial ally. Her most significant relationship on the track is with her rival, Jashugan, a master of spiritual energy (chi) who transcends his cyborg body’s limitations. Their fight is a pivotal moment of mutual recognition and respect that helps Alita find a measure of peace. The Motorball arc concludes with Alita retiring from the sport as champion. She lives a quiet, civilian life for two years, taking up music and working as a bar singer, before new threats force her back into action.

For Motorball, Alita utilizes a specialized cyborg body designed for speed and flexibility, sacrificing some of the raw power and heavy weaponry of her previous Berserker body. This sleek, often purple-colored frame bore the number 99. Her primary weapon system is the Damascus Blade, which she wields with lethal precision, capable of slicing through opponents and their weapons with ease. While this body lacks the berserker’s plasma emission capabilities, it is perfectly tuned for the high-velocity, close-quarters combat of the racetrack, allowing her to perform incredible acrobatic feats and deliver devastating blows using her Panzer Kunst martial arts techniques.
