Description
The term Iron City Citizen refers to the general populace of the dystopian metropolis of Iron City in the 26th century, a sprawling urban environment located beneath the wealthy floating city of Zalem. These citizens form the lowest social stratum in a world still recovering from a catastrophic conflict known as "The Fall," a war that occurred three centuries before the main events of the story. Living in a heavily populated and lawless urban sprawl, they exist in a state of perpetual struggle, where survival is a daily chore and advanced technology is heavily restricted. The city's architecture is a mishmash of makeshift ghettos and stacked trailers, reflecting a society that has rebuilt itself from the ruins of a forgotten age.

The personality of an Iron City citizen is largely shaped by the harsh and unforgiving nature of their environment. They are pragmatic and often weary, having grown accustomed to a life where "the strong prey on the weak". This has fostered a general sense of hopelessness, with the primary aspiration for many being to escape their squalid existence by any means necessary to go to Zalem. Despite this bleak outlook, the citizenry is diverse, ranging from flesh-and-blood humans to those with various cybernetic prosthetics and full-body cyborg replacements. This diversity, however, does not create unity, as the city is defined by a dog-eat-dog mentality where individuals must remain focused on their own survival.

Their primary motivation is intrinsically linked to the floating city above them. Zalem represents an unattainable paradise, a place of wealth and safety that stands in stark contrast to the squalor of Iron City. The dream of ascending to Zalem is the driving force for many citizens, a goal that the ruling powers exploit to maintain control. For a chosen few, this dream is dangled as a prize for winning the deadly cyborg sport of Motorball, while for others, the promise of reaching the sky city is a lie used to manipulate them into performing criminal acts. This desire for a better life, ultimately unattainable for most, defines their daily existence.

In the narrative of the story, the citizens of Iron City serve primarily as the backdrop for the rise of the protagonist, Alita. They represent the oppressed masses for whom she instinctively fights, as she "does not stand by in the presence of evil". The city’s social order is maintained not by police, but by cyborg bounty hunters known as "Hunter-Warriors," who kill wanted criminals on the spot; this system reinforces the city’s violent and mercenary nature. Furthermore, the citizens are the victims of the various criminal elements, particularly those who stalk the streets at night to steal cybernetic body parts from unsuspecting cyborgs. They are also the spectators and participants in the brutal sport of Motorball, which serves as a primary source of entertainment and social control.

Key relationships for the Iron City citizen are defined by their place in the rigid class structure. Their relationship is one of subjugation to the rulers of Zalem, a city that literally hovers above them, from which garbage sometimes rains down. A mysterious figure named Nova, a scientist from Zalem, manipulates events from behind the scenes, pulling the strings of the city's kingpin, Vector, to maintain authority over the populace. The citizens are also subject to the Hunter-Warriors, who, while serving a function of law enforcement, are motivated by bounty rather than justice, adding another layer of transactional danger to life in Iron City.

As a collective group, the citizens of Iron City do not undergo significant development. They remain a static representation of a world in decay, their condition serving as a constant to highlight the changes in the central characters. The environment they inhabit is the crucible that tests the protagonist’s resolve, but the populace itself continues to live in the shadow of Zalem, waiting for a champion they may not fully understand. Their primary role is to be the souls that Alita seeks to save, representing the "human spirit" worth fighting for in a world devoid of mercy.

Notable abilities are not a characteristic of the general populace. Instead, their most defining trait is their vulnerability. They live in a location where innocent people die and guilty people go free, and where advanced weaponry like guns is outlawed, leaving them mostly defenseless against organized criminals and powerful cyborgs. Their physicality is variable, a mix of human and machine, but in a world of dedicated warrior cyborgs, the average Iron City citizen possesses little power, making their existence one of resilience rather than strength.
