Description
Kim Kyung-soo is the central protagonist of the 2001 South Korean live-action film Volcano High, a martial arts action comedy. He is a high school student with a long history of being expelled from educational institutions. Having been asked to leave eight different schools, he arrives at Volcano High for his ninth and final chance at an education, determined to graduate at all costs and avoid bringing further shame to his family.

His troubled academic past stems directly from his inability to control his powerful and unique supernatural abilities. Unlike ordinary students, Kim Kyung-soo possesses the formidable power to harness and manipulate wave energy, which most commonly manifests as control over water. His power is latent and often triggered when he feels threatened or provoked, leading to destructive outbursts that have defined his reputation as a rebellious troublemaker. Despite this exterior, he is portrayed as a fundamentally kind-hearted and non-confrontational individual who generally wishes to avoid conflict and simply survive his school year unnoticed.

Kim Kyung-soo’s primary motivation throughout the story is self-preservation and redemption. Living under the constant threat of his ninth and final expulsion, he works hard to suppress his powers and stay out of trouble. However, the chaotic environment of Volcano High makes this goal nearly impossible. The school is rife with warring student factions and a corrupt faculty, all vying for control of a legendary Secret Manuscript said to grant ultimate power. He is reluctantly drawn into this conflict, initially trying to remain neutral but finding himself forced to fight in order to protect others and restore order to the school. His journey transforms from simple survival to accepting responsibility for his strength and using it to confront the evils threatening his peers.

Within the school, his most significant relationships are with three key individuals. He becomes the rival of Jang Ryang, the feared leader of the Dark Oxen gang, who initially seeks to recruit Kyung-soo due to his power but grows to despise him as a romantic rival and threat to his control over the school. He develops a close bond with Yoo Chae-yi, the skilled captain of the kendo team known as Icy Jade, who believes in his innocence and becomes his love interest. Most crucially, he is guided by Song Hak-rim, the school’s most powerful martial artist, who recognizes Kyung-soo’s potential as the one destined to end the school’s seventeen years of chaos. Hak-rim trains Kyung-soo to master his powers properly, shifting his perspective from avoiding his fate to embracing it.

Kim Kyung-soo undergoes significant character development, evolving from a scared, self-doubting outcast trying to hide his abilities into a confident hero who accepts his role as the school’s protector. This change is marked by a climactic showdown with the film’s primary antagonist, Mr. Ma, a sadistic teacher with a personal history with Kyung-soo who also wields wave energy. His notable abilities, besides water manipulation, include immense latent potential that allows him to eventually surpass even trained masters like Hak-rim. The final revelation of his journey is that the legendary manuscript is a metaphor, and he, Kim Kyung-soo, is the true power destined to bring peace, proving that his strength lies not just in his fists, but in his heart.
