Description
In the television special Kamen Rider Agito Special: Aratanaru Henshin, which takes place between episodes 35 and 36 of the main series, Kamen Rider Agito is the alter ego of Shouichi Tsugami. Shouichi is a young man with a mysterious past who previously suffered from amnesia. During the events of the special, he unexpectedly reconnects with Dr. Higashi Kunieda, an old friend and caretaker from the time he was hospitalized. This reunion forces Shouichi to confront not just his past, but also the growing and unstable nature of his own power.
Shouichi’s personality is defined by a gentle and caring nature, but it is also marked by a deep-seated fear of the dangerous power he wields. He is not an aggressive hero; rather, he is someone who has been given an immense and frightening ability to protect others, which often puts him at odds with his own sense of self. His primary motivation is to fight against the monstrous Unknown to protect human lives, but a significant personal goal becomes learning to control the escalating power of his transformations. When he loses control of his Agito Burning Form and nearly attacks Dr. Kunieda, Shouichi is so horrified by his own actions that he runs away, demonstrating that his greatest battle is as much with his inner demons as it is with external monsters.
Within the story of the special, Shouichi’s role is central. He is the primary fighter against the Beetle Lord, but his journey is one of internal crisis and eventual triumph. His relationship with Dr. Kunieda is the emotional core of the special. Dr. Kunieda does not fear Shouichi; instead, he offers guidance and a tragic understanding, revealing that his own son committed suicide because he could not handle his slow, painful transformation into an Agito. This confession gives Shouichi a stark warning of the path ahead but also a reason to persevere. The doctor’s words that “eventually the sky will be clear” become the catalyst for Shouichi’s personal development, giving him the confidence to confront the enemy instead of fleeing from his own power.
Shouichi’s development in the special is directly tied to his abilities as Kamen Rider Agito. At the start of the final battle, he fights as the powerful but unstable Agito Burning Form. This form is characterized by immense strength that is difficult to control. When the combined efforts of the other Riders fail to defeat the powerful Beetle Lord, Shouichi looks up to see a clear blue sky. Remembering Dr. Kunieda’s words, he is able to harness the power of the sun, achieving a new and transcendent evolution: Agito Shining Form. This new form represents the culmination of his personal struggle, allowing him to master his power and single-handedly turn the tide of battle, defeating the enemy where the group could not.
