Description
Emperor Guillotine is the central antagonist and the leader of the interstellar terrorist organization known as Big Fire, or the Gargoyle Gang in some localizations, from the 1960s tokusatsu series Giant Robo. He is an alien being who arrived on Earth with the singular goal of conquering the planet. His physical form is a notable departure from human norms, featuring blue skin and tentacles that extend from the lower part of his head, giving him a monstrous, Cthulhu-like visage. He is almost always seen wearing a long, ornate robe and carrying a distinctive staff topped with a white orb.
In terms of personality, Guillotine is a tyrannical and ruthless overlord who has little tolerance for failure among his underlings. He is known to personally execute his own commanders when they disappoint him, demonstrating a cruel and unforgiving nature. Despite his immense personal power, he prefers to operate from a position of safety, directing his global conquest from the bridge of a multi-colored spaceship hidden at the bottom of the ocean. His primary motivation is the complete subjugation of Earth, a goal he pursues through a combination of infiltration, terrorism, and overwhelming force using giant monsters and mecha.
His role in the story is that of the ultimate puppeteer. For most of the series, Guillotine delegates the day-to-day operations of Big Fire to a series of colorful commanders, including figures like Doctor Over, Red Cobra, and Black Dia. These commanders are tasked with carrying out his will, which often involves creating or unleashing a new kaiju or giant robot to battle Giant Robo. His key relationship is, of course, with the hero Daisaku Kusama and his giant robot. He views Giant Robo, a weapon originally built for him by captive scientists, as the primary obstacle to his victory and dedicates immense resources to either recapturing or destroying it.
While he remains a distant figure for much of the series, his character sees a significant development in the final episode. With his entire command structure dismantled and his plans consistently thwarted, Guillotine is forced to take direct action. He first attempts to have Daisaku assassinated, and when that fails, he reveals his most formidable ability: he can grow to gigantic proportions to fight Giant Robo directly. This final confrontation reveals the most crucial aspect of his nature, as his body is composed of raw atomic energy. Attacking him directly would trigger a chain reaction powerful enough to destroy the entire Earth, rendering him effectively invincible as long as the planet's safety is a concern.
His notable abilities are considerable. Apart from his immense size and strength, his atomic composition allows him to fire powerful energy rays from his hands. He can also tear off one of his own claws and throw it as an explosive projectile. However, this same power is his ultimate weakness. In the series finale, Giant Robo, acting on its own initiative to protect Earth, seizes the gigantic emperor and flies him into space. Robo crashes into an oncoming meteor, detonating Guillotine's unstable form in the void and destroying them both, thus ending the alien tyrant's reign of terror.
