Description
Doctor Ova, known in Japanese as Dokutoru Ōva, is a recurring antagonist and a senior executive of the terrorist organization Big Fire in the classic anime series Giant Robo. He is easily recognized by his striking, inhuman appearance, characterized by a tall, slender frame and skin of a shiny, metallic silver hue. His head is completely bald, lacking eyebrows and eyelashes, with subtle ridges on his brow. Standing approximately 1.7 meters tall, Doctor Ova is not a native of Earth but an alien who serves directly under the organization's leader, Emperor Guillotine.
Despite his extraterrestrial origins, Doctor Ova adopts a surprisingly down-to-earth personality, though it is far from refined. He speaks with a rough, thuggish manner, often addressing his subordinates and enemies with a condescending and streetwise tone reminiscent of a yakuza gangster. His speech is also laced with an old-school Tokyo dialect, or Edo-ben, giving him a unique verbal tic. He proudly styles himself as the greatest physician in the universe, a self-proclaimed title of "the universe's best doctor," and demonstrates considerable skill in performing surgical procedures and gruesome body modifications.
Ova's primary motivation is the conquest of Earth on behalf of Big Fire, but his personal drive is heavily rooted in his own survival and immense ego. He is a schemer who concocts elaborate plots utilizing his unique brand of alien science and flora. His most infamous schemes involve the Satan Rose, a monstrous, man-eating plant from outer space. He uses his medical expertise to brainwash human scientists, such as a botanist named Dr. Yasui, to help him cultivate and weaponize these plants. His overarching goal is to prove his superiority and carry out devastating attacks against the International Police Organization and the young hero Daisaku Kusama.
In the narrative, Doctor Ova functions as a persistent and versatile field commander for Big Fire. He is not a simple brute but a master of deception who employs psychological warfare, such as taking large groups of civilians hostage, to achieve his ends. His schemes often backfire due to his own arrogance and his underestimation of human resilience, as seen when his brainwashed victims break free from his control to thwart his plans. His relationship with his superiors is one of fear and desperation. After a string of failures, he becomes obsessed with redeeming himself, knowing that Emperor Guillotine punishes failure with death. This drives him to launch his final, desperate "Ova Plan" to turn the Kanto region into an inferno using a second-generation Satan Rose.
Doctor Ova does not undergo traditional character development or redemption; instead, his trajectory is one of escalating desperation. He begins as a confident and cunning villain but progressively unravels as his careful plans are dismantled. His key relationships are primarily functional and antagonistic. He commands various monstrous servants, such as the beast Raigon and the electrical creature Sparky, viewing them as disposable tools. He also works alongside other Big Fire agents, like the Black Diamond, in temporary alliances of convenience. His most critical relationship is with Emperor Guillotine, whose authority he fears absolutely. Ultimately, having exhausted his master's patience, Doctor Ova's repeated failures lead to his final moment. After the "Ova Plan" is destroyed by Giant Robo, he begs for his life but is summarily executed by a beam of energy fired by the unforgiving Emperor Guillotine.
Doctor Ova possesses a wide array of abilities that make him a formidable opponent. His primary power source is a blue star-shaped pendant he wears on his chest; this serves as the catalyst for his psychic abilities. When in possession of it, he can teleport himself and others across short distances. He is also a proficient swordsman, and his body has been modified so that his arms are detachable, allowing him to fling them at enemies as a projectile weapon. When his pendant is removed, however, all of his psychic powers are instantly sealed, leaving him vulnerable. His medical knowledge is advanced enough to perform brain surgery for mind control and reconstruct monsters. In combat, he relies on these psychic powers and his cunning, rarely engaging in direct physical brawls unless he has the advantage.
