Description
Kenichi Mitsuba is the central human character in the 2004 live-action film Nin x Nin: Ninja Hattori-kun, the Movie. Within this adaptation, he is portrayed as an ordinary 10-year-old boy who is unexpectedly chosen to become the master of Kanzo Hattori, a young ninja from the Iga clan sent to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) as part of his training. This event marks a dramatic shift in Kenichi's otherwise normal life, initiating the central adventure of the movie.
Kenichi is depicted as a kind and friendly child, but he is generally an average student without any exceptional skills. His personality is not defined by great ambition or talent, but rather by his loyalty and his willingness to accept Hattori into his life as a friend, despite the unusual circumstances. He is portrayed as a relatable, grounded character who represents the ordinary world that Hattori, a ninja, is learning to understand and protect.
The primary motivation for Kenichi throughout the film is the preservation and strengthening of his unique friendship with Hattori. He is not a hero seeking adventure, but a normal boy who gets caught up in a dangerous situation because of the bond he has formed. His role in the story is that of the master, friend, and emotional anchor for Hattori. While Hattori possesses ninja abilities, Kenichi provides the human connection and the reason for the ninja to stay in Edo. The plot is driven by Kenichi's relationship with Hattori, especially when his safety becomes the central conflict. He also shares a significant friendship with Midori, a blind artist, and the trio often spend time together. His class teacher, Sato Sensei, is secretly the Koga ninja Kemumaki Kemozo, which adds a layer of complexity to the everyday setting of his school.
The key relationships in Kenichi's life are pivotal to the film's narrative. His bond with Hattori is the core of the story, built on trust and mutual respect. His parents, Taeko and Kentaro Mitsuba, represent the typical family life from which his adventures with Hattori are kept secret, as Hattori must never be seen by anyone other than his master. His connection with Midori is also crucial, as it is through her that Hattori learns Kenichi has been kidnapped by the antagonist, Kurokage.
Kenichi undergoes a subtle but significant development through the film's events. He begins as a normal boy who becomes a ninja's master almost by chance. As the plot progresses, particularly when he is kidnapped by the rogue Koga ninja Kurokage, his role shifts from passive observer to the emotional catalyst for the climax. The peril he faces and Hattori's determination to rescue him solidify their friendship. In the film's resolution, after Hattori explains he must leave because he broke the Iga clan's rule by being seen, he imparts a final lesson to Kenichi, telling him to be friends with anyone who can understand and support each other. This moment suggests Kenichi's own understanding of friendship has deepened through his extraordinary experiences.
Unlike his ninja companion, Kenichi does not possess any notable superhuman or martial abilities. His strength lies in his humanity, his courage in the face of danger, and his capacity for loyalty. He is the heart of the film, a typical boy whose ordinary life is transformed by an extraordinary friendship with a ninja. His primary ability is simply being a good friend, which ultimately proves to be a powerful force that helps defeat the villain and reaffirms the film's central theme of friendship.
