Description
Iwata, also known as Samuel in some English adaptations, is a minor antagonist from the anime Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. He is an inmate at Kokubu Prison's Northern Block and serves as the first significant adversary that the protagonist, Riki-Oh, must confront.

Before his incarceration, Iwata was a notable member of the Oowada gang and maintained close ties with major gang leaders in the Kansai region of Japan. These connections extended into the prison system, allowing him to wield significant influence among the guards and administration. He could bribe prison staff and even arrange for the withdrawal of other inmates' paroles without facing repercussions. His power within the prison is such that he is typically followed by two subordinates, one of whom is implied to be an informant.

In terms of personality, Iwata is described as a vindictive bully who enjoys intimidating those weaker than himself. He reacts with immediate and vicious anger toward anyone who challenges or attacks him. He is also notably single-minded and overconfident, likely because he had operated without consequences for so long that he grew to believe he was untouchable. This lack of foresight and his refusal to rethink his plans ultimately lead to his downfall.

Iwata enters the story when he accuses a fellow prisoner named Wakamatsu of stealing his towel. He brutally attacks Wakamatsu and destroys a toy train the man had made for his child. When Wakamatsu attempts to retaliate with a hand planer, Iwata wrests the tool away and drives it through Wakamatsu's face, scalping a rectangle of flesh. After bribing the guards to accept a false version of events, Iwata attempts to leave the breakroom. At this moment, Riki-Oh trips him, causing him to fall face-first onto a plank embedded with nails that pierce his hand and face. Iwata then swears revenge on Riki-Oh.

Determined to get even, Iwata rejects his subordinates' warnings that Riki-Oh is dangerous, even to the guards. Instead, he bribes a guard to release an extremely violent prisoner named Bandou, intending for Bandou to kill Riki-Oh. When Bandou fails and is killed by Riki-Oh in the prison showers, Iwata attempts to attack Riki-Oh from behind with a nail he had concealed. Riki-Oh intercepts the blow, squeezes Iwata's hand until it breaks, and then delivers a fatal punch to Iwata's side that explodes his innards from his body.

Iwata has several key relationships that define his role in the story. His connection to the Oowada gang gives him leverage over the prison guards and warden, making him an unofficial power broker within the institution. His two toadies, including the possible informant Tanimoto, enable his operations but also fear him. His adversarial relationship with Wakamatsu demonstrates his cruelty, while his vendetta against Riki-Oh reveals his vengeful nature and poor judgment.

In terms of development, Iwata does not undergo significant change throughout his appearance in the narrative. He begins as a cruel, powerful bully and remains so until his death, though his confidence is shaken when Riki-Oh wounds him with the nails. His primary role in the story is to establish the brutal hierarchy of Kokubu Prison and to serve as the first obstacle that demonstrates Riki-Oh's extraordinary strength and willingness to fight back against oppression.

Iwata possesses notable abilities relative to ordinary prisoners. He is strong enough to wield a hand planer as a deadly weapon, removing a large piece of flesh from Wakamatsu's face with a single swipe. He also proves capable of driving a nail through Riki-Oh's hand during their final confrontation. However, he is fundamentally a cowardly fighter who prefers to attack when his opponent is distracted or off guard. His physical appearance is characterized by shaved black hair, a crooked mouth particularly visible when he speaks, and after his first encounter with Riki-Oh, he wears a medical eyepatch over his right eye along with various bandages.

The different adaptations of the story, including the 1991 film and the OVA, remain largely faithful to the character as depicted in the original manga, with the film version giving him the nickname the North Cell Killer.
