Description
La suivante de la Reine is the fictional character Rosalie Lamorliere, who appears in the anime and manga series Lady Oscar, also known as The Rose of Versailles. She is introduced as a young woman from a poor background who has grown up with her adoptive mother and her adopted sister, Jeanne Valois. Her mother is killed when a carriage driven by the Comtesse de Polignac runs her over, and Rosalie initially seeks vengeance against the noblewoman. In her quest for revenge, she encounters Oscar François de Jarjayes, whom she mistakenly attacks. Oscar subdues her and, recognizing her desperate situation, brings her into the Jarjayes household. Under Oscar’s guidance, Rosalie learns courtly manners, etiquette, and even fencing, and she becomes a loyal member of the family.

Rosalie’s personality is defined by a combination of innocence, sweetness, and a fierce sense of loyalty. She is naive and warm-hearted, which allows her to be readily accepted by those around her. At the same time, she possesses a quiet strength and determination, especially when it comes to protecting the people she cares about. Her motivations evolve from personal revenge to a desire to support Oscar and later to serve Queen Marie Antoinette in her final days.

Her role in the story is multifaceted. In the early part of the narrative, she serves as a surrogate for the audience, coming from outside the aristocratic world and learning about the intrigues of Versailles alongside the reader. She is also a key figure in the subplot involving the Black Knight, Bernard Châtelet. She falls in love with Bernard and eventually marries him. Later, after the revolution takes hold, Rosalie becomes the chambermaid to the imprisoned Marie Antoinette. In this role, she provides comfort and humanity to the former queen during her last days, a historically inspired element that underscores Rosalie’s compassion.

Key relationships include her bond with Oscar, who acts as a protector and mentor. Rosalie deeply admires Oscar and looks up to her as a role model. Her relationship with Bernard Châtelet is a romantic one that leads to marriage, and she is also connected to Jeanne Valois, though their relationship is strained by Jeanne’s ambition and deceit. Later, her relationship with Marie Antoinette is marked by tender care and loyalty.

Rosalie undergoes significant development. She begins as a destitute, revenge-driven girl and gradually transforms into a composed and noble-hearted woman. Her journey takes her from the slums of Paris into the heart of the court, and finally to the prison of the Conciergerie. The loss of Oscar and the chaos of the revolution deepen her maturity, and she ultimately fulfills her role as the queen’s last faithful servant.

Notable abilities include her quick learning in courtly arts and swordsmanship under Oscar’s tutelage, but her most remarkable attribute is her unwavering kindness and ability to provide emotional support even in the darkest circumstances. She possesses no superhuman powers, but her resilience and empathy make her an indispensable presence in the latter part of the story.
