Description
Ran Saotome, also known as Sazer-Visuel, is a character in the Japanese series Chōseishin GranSazer. She is a twenty-year-old street dancer born on September 22 under the zodiac sign Virgo, with blood type O. From her middle school years she trained alongside her close friend Yuko, with whom she formed the dance unit 7th Avenue, and the pair shared a dream of one day performing in front of the Statue of Liberty. Energetic and outwardly carefree, Ran is also deeply loyal and does not hesitate to risk her life for the people she cares about.
Ran enters the story through her childhood friend Akagi Junya, who becomes wanted in connection with a robbery. The case is investigated by the police officer Gou, a man who later awakens as the Earth Tribe warrior Sazer-Tragos. Early in the story, Ran is briefly taken by Karin and the Wind Tribe, who hope to make her their ally, but she escapes and joins the central group of heroes. Her awakening as a Gransazer comes when a dangerous criminal threatens Gou; her intense anger at the danger to someone she has come to trust triggers her transformation into Sazer-Visuel, the Virgo warrior and the third member of the Earth Tribe.
As a person, Ran is cheerful, bright, and at times seemingly flighty, but beneath that surface she is serious, devoted, and brave. She is highly sensitive, and this sensitivity gives her a unique gift among the warriors: by touching the Crystal Slab, she can read the messages and stored knowledge of an ancient intelligence connected to it, including the true history of the ancient war. Because of this, she is eventually revealed as the team's designated communicator, entrusted with the vital mission of conveying that the people of Earth are not descendants of the extinct alien race known as the Bosquito, and with carrying a message of peace to the universal alliance. Her ability to gather information about enemy movements and plans through the slab also makes her an important strategic asset to her comrades.
Within the Earth Tribe, Ran is the only female member and serves as the force that holds the group together. Her teammates include the solitary former fighter Naoto Matsuzaka, who becomes Sazer-Tawlon, and the stern police officer Gou, who becomes Sazer-Tragos, and Ran works to mediate between them and keep the often troubled trio united. Although she is younger than both men, she takes on the role of rallying and organizing the Earth Tribe as they learn to fight as a team, and her presence completes the tribe so they can summon the giant mecha Gun Caesar. Among the other warriors, she is especially close to Ken Shidou of the Flame Tribe, and their easy friendship is a recurring element of the story, although it never develops into a romance. Her childhood friend Junya and her dance partner Yuko remain important figures in her personal background, grounding her motivations in devotion to the people around her.
In combat, Sazer-Visuel is a warrior of the Earth element whose armor is modeled on a leopard. Her fighting style combines running speed, agility, and the raw strength of a wild beast, and her natural grace as a dancer gives her a clear advantage in battle. She wields the claw-shaped weapon Lady Claw and uses it to perform her signature finishing move, Night Scratch. The symbol of Virgo appears on her chest armor. She is the only member of the Earth Tribe who never pilots the Gun Caesar alone, yet her contribution to the cause is no less central, as her capacity to perceive the ancient will and interpret the records of the Crystal Slab repeatedly guides the team through critical moments. Over the course of the series, Ran develops from a young woman devoted to her dream of becoming a professional dancer overseas into a committed warrior and, ultimately, a messenger of peace between humanity and the wider universe.
