Description
Prof. Ichiro Horiguchi is a prominent space archaeologist and a professor at Tōa University, where he heads the Horiguchi Laboratory. He is a supporting figure in Chōseishin GranSazer, serving as one of the most important allies of the GranSazers. Around fifty years old, he is recognizably bald, although in the period before the story's main events he wore a toupee; he stopped using it about three years before discovering the ancient crystal plates that changed his life.

In academic circles, Horiguchi is known as a heretic. His research topics, especially his insistence on the existence of a highly advanced prehistoric civilization with astonishing scientific capabilities, draw heavy criticism from his colleagues, and his excavation work is frequently dismissed. Despite this, he uses that reputation to his advantage, deliberately drawing public attention away from the true significance of the Chouseishin dig sites and the discoveries connected to the GranSazers. He is an amiable and clever man with a distinctive catchphrase, "Anpontan," and a habit of taking notes. His somewhat eccentric manner makes him an approachable mentor figure rather than a distant scholar.

Horiguchi's role in the story begins with his analysis of ancient crystal data, which reveals the secrets of the GranSazers, the Chouseishin, and the ancient conflict they were created for. From the very beginning, he assists the Flame Tribe, helping them understand their duty as warriors. He acts as an advisor to the Flame Tribe and, by extension, to the wider group of twelve warriors, offering guidance grounded in his unmatched knowledge of the super-ancient civilization. He is also the one who excavates the Chouseishin hidden in various locations. In the theatrical film connected to the story, he represents the GranSazers, publicly announces the existence of the alien threat known as the Bosquito, and searches for someone capable of using the crystal plate to summon the GranSazers.

His key relationship is with Mika Shidou, a GranSazer and member of the Flame Tribe, who was his student and works as his assistant. Through her, he is connected to the other Flame Tribe members, Tenma Kudou and Ken Shidou, and his exchanges with the impulsive Tenma are a recurring source of warmth and humor. He also maintains friendly ties with the wider circle of warriors; at the wedding of Naoto Matsuzaka and Ryouko Amemiya at the end of the main story, he even catches the bridal bouquet.

In terms of development, Horiguchi moves from a mocked academic outlier to a trusted and indispensable supporter of the warriors. His unorthodox research is vindicated as the ancient civilization and its technology prove real, and he embraces his role as a researcher, coordinator, and caretaker for the heroes rather than a combatant. His notable abilities are intellectual rather than physical: in-depth knowledge of the super-ancient civilization and the origins of the GranSazers, expertise in deciphering ancient crystal records, excavation skill, and the tactical cleverness to keep sensitive discoveries hidden from the public. His scientific insight and personal loyalty make him a quiet foundation that allows the GranSazers to fulfill their mission.
