Description
In the alternate retelling presented in Kamen Rider Ryuki Special: 13 Riders, Shinji Kido is an ordinary young man working as an employee at the ORE Journal. His life takes a dramatic turn when he is accidentally pulled into the Mirror World by a monster known as a Mispider. His fate becomes intertwined with that of the previous Kamen Rider Ryuki, a man named Koichi Sakakibara, who saves Shinji from the monster. Sakakibara is mortally wounded during this encounter and, unable to continue fighting, passes his Card Deck to Shinji before dying. Receiving this power, Shinji becomes the new Kamen Rider Ryuki, taking on the mantle and the dragon-shaped armored form that comes with it.
Shinji is defined by a strong sense of idealism and a deep-seated desire to prevent bloodshed. His core personality is that of a well-meaning individual who is thrust into a violent conflict he never asked for, yet he faces it with a determination born from gratitude to his predecessor. He cannot accept the brutal reality of the Rider War, a deadly game where Kamen Riders are forced to fight each other to the death. Carrying on what he believes to be Sakakibara’s wish, Shinji’s primary motivation is a peaceful one: to convince every participating Rider to stop the senseless fighting and put an end to the war altogether. This mission defines his role in the story, setting him in opposition to nearly every other Rider who is committed to the battle for their own desires.
Throughout the special, Shinji’s journey is marked by his interactions with other key figures. He forms a reluctant and uneasy alliance with Ren Akiyama, the cynical and aggressive Kamen Rider Knight. While Ren initially dismisses Shinji’s naive ideals, the two share a common goal in trying to survive the onslaught. Shinji also meets Yui Kanzaki, a woman connected to the mysterious creator of the Rider War, who helps him understand the rules of the Mirror World. His approach is rejected by the majority of the other Riders, including the predatory Takeshi Asakura (Kamen Rider Ouja) and the opportunistic Shuichi Kitaoka (Kamen Rider Zolda), who see the war as an opportunity. Shinji’s pleas fall on deaf ears, and he is eventually lured into the Mirror World under a false truce and ambushed.
Shinji undergoes significant development, though perhaps not the kind he initially sought. After his Ryuki deck is destroyed in a fight by the immensely powerful Kamen Rider Odin, Shinji loses his ability to fight. In a pivotal moment, Ren Akiyama is mortally wounded by Kamen Rider Verde. Before dying, Ren passes his own Card Deck to Shinji, telling him to fight. This tragic event forces Shinji to evolve. Honoring Ren’s dying wish, he sets aside his purely pacifist goal and takes on the mantle of Kamen Rider Knight, later utilizing its Survive form to become Kamen Rider Knight Survive. This transformation represents a hardening of his resolve; while he still seeks an end to the war, he now accepts that he must fight to achieve it.
As a Kamen Rider, Shinji’s abilities are formidable. Using his Advent Deck and the V-Buckle belt, he transforms into Kamen Rider Ryuki. His suit is equipped with the Drag Visor on his left arm, a device that allows him to read Advent Cards. His powers are derived from his contract with Dragreder, a massive fire-breathing dragon-like Mirror Monster. By using his Advent Card, he can summon Dragreder to fight alongside him. His other cards grant him access to specific weapons and attacks: Sword Vent summons a sword called the Drag Saber; Strike Vent equips him with the Drag Claw gauntlet to fire fireballs; and Guard Vent manifests the Drag Shield for defense. His ultimate finisher as Ryuki is the Dragon Rider Kick, where he launches himself into the air with Dragreder, who then propels him with a blast of flame into a powerful flying kick. After inheriting the Knight deck, Shinji becomes Kamen Rider Knight and can further access the Knight Survive form, but within this special's narrative, his key transformation is into Knight Survive, a form that enhances his already considerable abilities to surpass most other combatants. The story concludes with two possible outcomes: in one ending, Shinji, now as Knight Survive, faces the remaining hostile Riders in a final battle; in the alternate ending, he destroys the master mirror, only to be confronted with the possibility that the Rider War will never truly end.
