Description
Kei Karasuma is a character who appears in the film Kamen Rider Blade: Missing Ace. Before the events of the movie, he was the president of BOARD, the organization responsible for developing the Rider Systems used to combat the Undead. As a 48-year-old professor, his scientific expertise was foundational to the creation of the transformation belts and Rouse Cards used by Kamen Riders Blade, Garren, and Leangle. His background is that of a brilliant but secretive inventor, deeply entangled with the dangerous artifacts and creatures his technology was designed to control.
In Missing Ace, which takes place four years after the conclusion of the original series, Karasuma's primary role is that of an instigator and a tragic catalyst for the plot. He works alongside former Rider Sakuya Tachibana, and together they discover an object known as the Stone of Relief. Driven by his scientific curiosity and a sense of responsibility, Karasuma makes the fateful decision to crack the seal on this stone. This action inadvertently leads to the creation of a Vanity Card, an anomaly indicating the presence of a new, powerful Undead. His motivations in the film are rooted in his past work; he seeks to understand and manage the very forces he helped unleash, attempting to cover all fifty-three Rouse Cards, including the dangerous Black Joker card, to prevent a catastrophe.
Karasuma's narrative function is defined by his death, which serves as the inciting incident for the other characters. Shortly after the seal is broken, an Albino Joker appears and unleashes hordes of Undead. During this attack, Karasuma is confronted and killed. His demise is a pivotal moment, as it not only raises the stakes for the remaining protagonists but also leads to a cover-up. To protect the feelings of his adoptive daughter, Amane Kurihara, and to maintain a semblance of normalcy, Sakuya Tachibana conceals the truth of his violent death from the public, revealing it only to the active Kamen Riders. Karasuma's key relationship in the film is therefore with Tachibana, his former colleague who must carry on his legacy and conceal his fate, and with Amane, the young woman he raised as a second father.
While the film focuses on his fate, his personality can be inferred from his actions. He is a man of action and intellect, willing to take enormous risks to further his understanding of the Undead and the Rider systems he created. His decision to crack the seal on the Stone of Relief, despite the unknown dangers, highlights a character defined by a bold, and ultimately fatal, scientific ambition. As for his abilities, Kei Karasuma is not a fighter or a Kamen Rider himself. His notable abilities are purely intellectual and technical; he is a master engineer and scientist whose true power lay in his capacity to create the very technology that allows others to become Riders. His greatest contribution to the narrative is his knowledge and the tragic consequences that arise from its application.
