Description
Butler is a character from the Pokémon anime who was once a scientist for Team Magma. His career with the organization ended in disgrace after a failed experiment to revive the legendary Pokémon Groudon from a fossil, an event that led to his dismissal. This failure filled Butler with deep bitterness and a powerful desire for revenge, driving him to find an alternative method to bring Groudon to life. He concluded that the process would require an immense source of energy, which he discovered becomes available only once every thousand years with the appearance of the Millennium Comet. Along with his fiancée, Diane, Butler eventually located the crystallized cocoon of the Mythical Pokémon Jirachi in the valley of Forina.
Butler is characterized by his obsessive ambition and his skills as a stage magician, going by the title of the Great Butler. He presents himself at the Millennium Festival, where he strategically introduces the awakened Jirachi to the young trainer Max, believing that a friend is what the Pokémon needs to awaken fully from its slumber. Butler’s primary motivation is to harness Jirachi’s reality-warping powers for his own ends, intending to use the Pokémon’s energy to create an artificial Groudon. His relationship with Diane is a key part of his story; she initially assists him in his quest but ultimately turns against his destructive plan, recognizing the danger and the toll it has taken on him. His relationship with Max is transactional, as he views the boy merely as a tool to awaken Jirachi.
In the narrative of the film Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker, Butler serves as the main antagonist who captures Jirachi to power his experiment. His scheme succeeds in creating a monstrous, fake Groudon that immediately begins to absorb energy from the land and capture other Pokémon. However, witnessing the rampage of the creature he unleashed leads Butler to a significant change. He finally realizes that his vendetta and ambition are less important than the people he cares about, and he abandons his life as a magician and would-be conqueror. He reappears in a flashback during the opening sequence of Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys and has a cameo in the credits of a subsequent film, where he is shown living peacefully with Diane as a farmer in Forina, having fully retired from his former life.
Regarding his abilities, Butler is a capable Pokémon trainer who owns a Salamence, which is known to use the move Flamethrower. His most notable ability is not a traditional combat skill but his scientific and magical prowess; he successfully creates an entirely artificial Pokémon resembling Groudon by using the power of Jirachi. He also temporarily commands Jirachi itself during the climax of his scheme before the creature is freed and used to destroy the fake Groudon.
