Description
Kotaro Minami was born on the day of a solar eclipse alongside his stepbrother Nobuhiko Akizuki. On the night of their nineteenth birthday, the two were abducted by the criminal cult Gorgom, which had long awaited them as the chosen Century Kings. Kotaro was surgically implanted with the King Stone of the Sun, transforming him into the cyborg Black Sun. Before the final brainwashing step could be completed, he escaped with the help of his foster father, the scientist Soichiro Akizuki, who had attempted to save both boys. After learning that Gorgom had killed his true parents and that his own body had been turned into a weapon, Kotaro embraced his new identity as Kamen Rider Black and dedicated himself to protecting humanity and rescuing Nobuhiko from the cult.
Kotaro is defined by his courage, gentleness, and deep sense of loyalty. He is initially shocked and confused by the nightmare he has been thrust into, but he quickly grows into a determined and selfless hero. He does not seek vengeance for himself; rather, he fights to prevent others from suffering under Gorgom's rule and to preserve the world he knows. He is compassionate toward the innocent victims of the cult's schemes and shows particular tenderness toward the family he still has, especially Nobuhiko's sister Kyoko Akizuki and the young Katsumi Kida. His driving motivation is twofold: to stop Gorgom's plans for world domination and to find a way to free his brother from the cult's control, even after Nobuhiko emerges as the silver-armored Shadow Moon and becomes his greatest enemy.
As the protagonist of the series, Kotaro is the primary force opposing Gorgom. He confronts a steady stream of mutants created by the cult, often on his own, and gradually challenges the Three High Priests—Darom, Baraom, and Bishium—who serve the aging Creation King. His role is that of a lone warrior struggling against an entrenched, supernaturally powerful organization, and his victories are hard-won and personal.
The most significant relationship in Kotaro's life is with Nobuhiko. The two grew up as brothers and best friends, but after Nobuhiko is fully transformed into Shadow Moon, his humanity is suppressed and he becomes a cold, ruthless commander. Kotaro refuses to give up on him, and this tragic bond fuels much of the series' emotional weight. Kotaro also forms a strong bond with the sentient motorcycle Battle Hopper and later with the armed vehicle Road Sector, which aid him in battle. Soichiro Akizuki, his foster father, is killed early in the series, but his sacrifice and guidance continue to inspire Kotaro.
Over the course of Kamen Rider Black, Kotaro evolves from a young man who was a victim of circumstance into a confident, battle‑hardened hero willing to shoulder the destiny of the Century Kings. He accepts that he may have to fight his brother to the death, but he never stops believing that some part of Nobuhiko can be saved. His final confrontation with the Creation King forces him to choose the fate of the world, and he ultimately delivers humanity from Gorgom's dark rule.
As Kamen Rider Black, Kotaro has a cyborg body powered by the King Stone of the Sun. He transforms by declaring the word "Transform" and assuming a special stance, which activates his belt. In this form, his strength, speed, stamina, and sensory abilities are greatly enhanced, allowing him to battle mutants and even take on all Three High Priests at once. His signature fighting techniques include the Rider Kick and the Rider Punch, which he often channels through his boots or gloves. He can also use the King Stone Flash, a concentrated energy discharge. His primary transport is the Battle Hopper, a modified motorcycle with sentient capabilities, including the ability to attack enemies and obey its rider's will. Later he pilots the Road Sector, an armored vehicle armed with powerful weaponry. Despite his fearsome appearance, Kotaro fights with discipline and a clear moral purpose, cementing him as one of the most iconic heroes in the larger Kamen Rider canon.
