Description
Jigoku Taishi, whose name translates to Hell Ambassador, is an executive-level villain within the evil organization Shocker, first appearing in the original Kamen Rider series. Before his time with Shocker, he was the leader of a guerrilla movement that carried out revolutionary activities across Southeast Asia. His background as a field commander is reflected in his ruthless efficiency. He is also known by his true monstrous identity, Garagaranda, a rattlesnake-themed creature, and is referred to by the name Damon in some supplementary materials.

As a character, Jigoku Taishi embodies unwavering fanaticism and complete devotion to Shocker's cause. He is a cruel and determined strategist, taking command of Shocker's Japanese branch following the departure of Doctor Death. His personality is marked by a fierce pride and a willingness to sacrifice anything, including his own life, to defeat the Kamen Riders. When faced with capture, he has shown a desperate resolve, begging his allies to kill him along with his Rider captive to ensure the mission's success. This profound hatred for the Kamen Riders, particularly Kamen Rider 1, defines his actions and establishes him as a primary arch-rival.

Jigoku Taishi's primary motivation is the complete domination of the world under Shocker's rule. He acts as a high-ranking general, directly overseeing operations and leading the charge against the forces of justice. In the original series, he captures the friends of Kamen Rider 1 and challenges him directly, seeking to personally eliminate the greatest threat to his organization. Later, after being resurrected alongside other fallen commanders like Colonel Zol and General Black, he participates in a plot to annihilate Japan using a deadly new toxic gas, showing his commitment to large-scale terror. Ultimately, his role is to serve as a major obstacle, repeatedly putting the heroes in life-threatening danger.

Throughout the story, Jigoku Taishi has key relationships primarily with the Kamen Riders, especially Takeshi Hongo, the original Kamen Rider 1. Their conflict is deeply personal, with the character's schemes almost always revolving around directly challenging or ambushing this specific enemy. He also interacts with other high-ranking Shocker officers, such as Doctor Death and the Great Leader. Despite being a superior, he still answers to the Great Leader, who once intervened to prevent his execution, stating his life was too valuable to waste. He also holds a complex relationship with his own subordinates, as seen in his interactions with Combatmen and other monsters.

The character has seen significant development across decades of appearances. He is first introduced commanding the Japanese branch of Shocker and meets his original end when he is defeated by Kamen Rider 1 in his Garagaranda form, exploding while screaming Shocker's battle cry. He is later resurrected by Destron in the series Kamen Rider V3 to participate in a new plot, where he ends up being used as a human shield by V3 before perishing again when the enemy base self-destructs. In later multi-series crossover films, such as Kamen Rider Decade: All Riders vs. Dai-Shocker, he appears as a commander in the unified Dai-Shocker organization, sporting a new black and green armored outfit. In the 2016 film Kamen Rider 1, the remnants of Shocker successfully revive him to lead them against the new Nova Shocker faction. In a major turn, Jigoku Taishi, as the last remaining Shocker general, temporarily allies with Kamen Riders 1, Ghost, and Specter to fight a common enemy. He receives a fatal wound in this battle and dies, but not before a final confrontation with his original nemesis, allowing the Riders to claim victory.

Jigoku Taishi possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable threat. In his human form, he wields a powerful whip as his primary weapon. His true form is Garagaranda, a humanoid rattlesnake monster. In this state, his right arm transforms into a whip-like appendage that he uses with deadly accuracy. He has incredibly sharp fangs filled with a potent venom. He also has the ability to burrow and move freely underground, allowing for surprise attacks. In later revivals, he demonstrates the ability to transform into his monster form while retaining parts of his human armor, enhancing his power and durability. His physical resilience is such that a cybernetic version of him, built from super steel, was once constructed capable of deflecting the Rider Kick.
