Description
Kabutorongu is a kaijin, a monster cyborg, affiliated with the secret terrorist organization Shocker, appearing in the original Kamen Rider television series and its theatrical film counterpart. His design is inspired by the Japanese rhinoceros beetle, a motif chosen for its popularity among children during the era of the show's production. Standing at 198 centimeters tall and weighing 77 kilograms, Kabutorongu was created in the mountains of Takao, an area just outside of Tokyo.

Kabutorongu possesses a boastful and arrogant personality, referring to himself as the Ironman of Shocker and an invincible cyborg. His primary function within Shocker is not merely brute force destruction but the recruitment and indoctrination of young agents. His mission is to lure children to Shocker's facilities, where they can be brainwashed and trained as future operatives for the organization. To this end, he uses his unique ability to spray a white anesthesia foam from a small horn on the top of his head. This foam can subdue victims and place them under his direct mental control. His primary target in his story appearance is a group of children, whom he gathers by using the promise of rhinoceros beetles as bait.

In combat, Kabutorongu is a formidable physical opponent. His most prominent weapon is the large horn on his forehead, which he claims is capable of mowing down large trees. He wields a pair of electromagnetic shears on his left hand, which are powerful enough to cut through steel. He can also fire special paralysis bullets from his head horn to disable his enemies. Beyond these physical attacks, Kabutorongu has several other notable abilities. He can transform his body into that of a standard rhinoceros beetle, allowing him to move undetected or escape danger. He is also capable of teleportation, appearing and disappearing at will to ambush his foes or evade capture. Despite his power, he has a specific weakness: if his primary horn is broken, his combat abilities are reduced by half.

Kabutorongu plays a direct antagonistic role in the story, serving under the higher command of Shocker's leaders, including the regional commander known as Jigoku Taishi, or Hell Ambassador. After gathering children at a Shocker school, one of his captive targets is a young boy named Shiro Ishikawa. Kabutorongu attempts to use Shiro and another ally, Kazuya Taki, as teaching aids for the graduation exams of the new Shocker recruits. His plans draw the attention of the hero, Takeshi Hongo, who transforms into Kamen Rider No. 1 to stop him. Their first confrontation involves Kabutorongu trapping Hongo inside an armored Shocker bus and attempting to cause a train collision.

The character undergoes a linear development typical of a villain-of-the-week, being destroyed in his primary episode. After a long battle, Kabutorongu is defeated by Kamen Rider's signature finishing move, the Rider Kick. He falls from a suspension bridge and explodes, an event that simultaneously breaks the brainwashing on the children he had controlled. His role is revisited shortly after in a subsequent episode, where he appears as a background character training Shocker combatants in a monster training facility. Kabutorongu also appears in the theatrical film Kamen Rider tai Jigoku Taishi. In this film, he is revived and is one of several monsters who fight against Kamen Rider. He meets his final end there after being struck in the abdomen by a powerful attack from the Rider.
