Description
Mami Yamase is a Japanese television personality, actress, and singer who debuted in 1985 as a pop idol. Her music career is primarily situated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during which she released approximately fifteen singles and several albums under the King Records label. As a music artist, Yamase is most notably connected to anime theme songs from this period, providing vocal performances for several television series and films.

One of her most significant anime contributions is to the mecha series Metal Armor Dragonar, known in Japanese as Kiko Senki Dragonar. Her seventh single, released on September 5, 1987, is a double A-side featuring the songs Starlight Serenade and Shiny Boy. Starlight Serenade served as the second opening theme song for the series, while Shiny Boy was used as the second ending theme. Both tracks were written by lyricist Yukinojo Mori, composed by Daisuke Inoue, and arranged by Kazuo Otani. The BGM Collection Vol. 3 soundtrack album for Metal Armor Dragonar, released on October 21, 1987, includes both of these vocal tracks performed by Yamase.

In 1988, Yamase was featured on another anime-themed single, a split release with fellow artist Mami Ayukawa. This 8cm CD single, released on August 5, 1988, pairs Ayukawa's Dream Color Chaser with Yamase's Starlight Serenade, both identified as theme songs for the Metal Armor Dragonar television anime.

Yamase also contributed music to the anime series Michael?!, also known as What's Michael?. Her single Hoshizora no Etranger, backed with Michael Ondo, was released on July 21, 1988, as theme songs for the show. A subsequent single, Sayonara no Koneko / Shitsuren Boogie, followed on October 21, 1988, providing additional theme music for the same series.

Her work extended to anime films as well. In 1986, she performed the songs Crystal Ball and Adieu my love, which served as the theme songs for the Super Mario Bros. anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Daisakusen. Additionally, she voiced the character of Princess Peach in the same film.

Beyond her anime work, Yamase released a number of singles and albums. Her debut single was Melon no Tameiki on March 21, 1986, followed by Cecelia B no Kataomoi and Heartbreak Cafe later that year. Her fourth single, Strange Pink, was released on January 1, 1987, with the B-side Modern City, a song written by lyricist Takashi Matsumoto and composer Yoshitaka Minami with arrangement by Shigeru Suzuki. Other singles include Kaiketsu Bunbun Girl, Kawaii Hito yo, Go! from 1989, and Ah Fushigina Kimochi from 1993.

Her studio albums include Ribbon (July 21, 1986), the mini-album Rise (December 5, 1986), Oyayubihime (November 21, 1989), Oyayubihime futatabi... (December 31, 1990), and Might Baby (November 21, 1993). A compilation album, Private Edition, was released on December 5, 1987, followed by Mami Yamase Collection on November 26, 1999, and a 25th Anniversary Best Album on April 20, 2011. On her 1989 album Oyayubihime, she contributed lyrics to the track Yamase no Kimochi, with the album's sound produced by Edozo Mishiba and Atsushi Yokozeki.

As a music artist, Mami Yamase represents the late-1980s Japanese idol singer archetype, bridging pop and rock arrangements in her anime theme songs. Her vocal style on recordings has been noted as distinct from her high-pitched speaking voice used in her television appearances. Through her work on series like Metal Armor Dragonar and Michael?!, she contributed to the soundtrack landscape of late-1980s anime, collaborating with established songwriters and composers such as Yukinojo Mori and Daisuke Inoue. Her industry significance lies in her dual career as a television personality and a recording artist whose work remains tied to notable anime franchises of her era.
