Description
See-Saw is a Japanese pop duo originally from Tokyo, formed in 1993. The group began as a trio consisting of Chiaki Ishikawa on vocals, Yuki Kajiura on keyboards, and Yukiko Nishioka on bass. Nishioka left the group in April 1994 to pursue a writing career, after which See-Saw continued as a duo. The group temporarily disbanded in 1995 but reunited in 2001, remaining active until approximately 2005 before entering another hiatus. In 2019, the duo resumed activities.
Chiaki Ishikawa serves as the lead vocalist and lyricist for many of the group's songs, while Yuki Kajiura is responsible for composition, arrangement, and keyboard performance. Kajiura is a renowned composer known for her work on numerous anime and game soundtracks, often featuring European-style melodies and constructed languages informally called Kajiurago.
See-Saw is best known for their contributions to anime theme songs, particularly from the early 2000s. Their most commercially successful period began with their work on the.hack multimedia franchise and the Gundam SEED series.
In the.hack franchise, See-Saw performed several key songs. For the television series.hack//SIGN, they provided the opening theme Obsession and the ending theme Yasashii Yoake. For the OVA series.hack//Liminality, they performed multiple theme songs including edge (vol. 1 opening), Tasogare no Umi (Sea of Twilight, ending theme), Senya Ichiya (Thousand Nights and One Night, vol. 2 opening), Kimi ga Ita Monogatari (The Story of You, vol. 3 opening), and Kioku (Memory, vol. 4 opening). For.hack//Legend of the Twilight (Tasogare no Udewa Densetsu), they performed the ending theme Emerald Green.
For the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series, See-Saw achieved significant popularity. Their song Anna ni Issho Datta no ni (Even Though We Were Together So Much) served as the first ending theme for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. The single was released in October 2002 and became one of their highest-charting releases. For Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, they performed the final ending theme Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru (You Are Similar to Me), released in August 2005. The group also contributed two insert songs, LOVE and Indio, to the anime series Noir.
The creative partnership within See-Saw involved distinct roles. Yuki Kajiura composed and arranged the majority of the group's music, while Chiaki Ishikawa wrote the lyrics for several of their major anime tie-ins, including Anna ni Issho Datta no ni, Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru, and Emerald Green. For other tracks such as Obsession, Yasashii Yoake, edge, and Tasogare no Umi, Kajiura handled both music and lyrics.
See-Saw released their first album, I Have a Dream, in September 1993 under the FunHouse label. A self-titled album, See-Saw, followed in October 1994. After their reunion, they released the compilation album Early Best and the studio album Dream Field on the same day, February 21, 2003, under Victor Entertainment. Dream Field included new recordings and mixes of their anime songs, such as Kimi ga Ita Monogatari (Dream Field Mix), alongside album-exclusive tracks like LOVE and Indio. In June 2020, the group released a comprehensive compilation album titled See-Saw Complete Best See-Saw-Scene.
The group's musical identity is characterized by Ishikawa's powerful and rich vocals combined with Kajiura's melodic and often orchestral pop compositions. Their work frequently blends rock elements, electronic sounds, and atmospheric arrangements, which became highly influential in anime music during the 2000s. See-Saw is recognized as a significant act in the anime music industry, bridging the gap between pop music and soundtrack composition, and their songs remain closely associated with the series for which they were created.
