Description
Mahōshōjo Ni Naritai, whose name translates to wanting to be a magical girl, is a Japanese rock band formed in January 2014. The group was created by producer and developer ADULT YUkun and originally operated as a five-piece commercial and creative team before evolving into a three-piece band. The band was formed under the concept of an RPG-style band that combines elements of a role-playing game with a rock band.

In August 2014, just months after forming, the band won the RO69JACK 2014 contest hosted by rockin'on, which led to their first performance at the ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2014. In 2015, they made their United States debut at the SXSW festival in Texas, where they were described as an absolute must-see by NPR Radio. The group also performed at COUNTDOWN JAPAN 19/20, a major New Years Eve event. In January 2015, they released their first mini-album Book of Adventure 1. The following year, in September 2016, they made their major label debut with the single KI-RA-RI on Sony Music Records. In 2017, they released their second single Revolutionary Mask.

The bands most prominent connection to anime works came in April 2018 with their fourth major single, titled START. The song was used as the ending theme for the popular anime Pazudora, where it was credited as START. This exposure brought the band significant popularity, and the theme was used for the anime for two years. Beyond original theme songs, the band has also performed cover versions of famous anime songs from series such as Ojamajo Doremi, One Piece, and Haruhi.

The band's musical identity blends elements of metal, punk, and electronic dance music while infusing role-playing game themes into their songs, lyrics, videos, and live performances. This approach has been described as creating an all-new Japanese alternative genre. In 2015, they were tapped to write a song for the idol group Shiritsu Ebisu Chugakou. In January 2018, they held a sold-out one-man live tour titled Magical Girl Nigiritai One-Man Tour To the Brave Ones We Don't Know Yet.

The bands lineup has experienced changes since formation. Vocalist Kaji Basil underwent surgery for vocal cord polyps in 2020, leading to a suspension of live performances. The group returned in October 2020 with Basil and restarted as a rock band. Guitarist Meiji left the band on April 12, 2021 due to health problems. Following this, the band consisted of Basil Hijira on vocals, gari on VJ and vocals, and Ui Biton on guitar.
