Description
STAR☆ANIS is a Japanese music unit formed in 2012, closely connected to the multimedia franchise Aikatsu! (also known as Idol Activity!). The group exists both as a fictional idol ensemble within the Aikatsu! anime series and as a real-life vocal group that performed theme songs and insert songs for the show. The unit originated from auditions supervised by anime director Seiji Mizushima, who selected members based on demo tapes and live performances at the Akihabara DearStage venue. The group is managed by DEARSTAGE inc. and released music under the Lantis label.
In the context of the Aikatsu! anime, STAR☆ANIS was formed when three existing in-show units—Soleil, Tristar, and Powa Powa Puririn—merged into a single group for a national summer tour. The name STAR☆ANIS is derived from star anise, a spice whose eight-pointed star shape reflects the eight members of the fictional group. The real-life vocal unit initially began with four members and expanded as new characters were introduced in the anime. The primary vocalists who recorded as STAR☆ANIS include Waka Kirishima (performing as the singing voice for Ichigo Hoshimiya), Fuuri Uebana (as Aoi Kiriya), Sunao Yoshikawa and later Sena Kana (as Ran Shibuki), Risuko Sasakama (as Mizuki Kanzaki), Remi Mitani (as Otome Arisugawa), Moe Yamazaki and later Mirei Mitani (as Yurika Todo), Eri Aino (as Sakura Kitaoji), and Yuna (as Kaede Ichinose). Additional members such as Mona and Ruka joined in later seasons.
STAR☆ANIS is credited with numerous opening and ending theme songs for the Aikatsu! television series. Their debut single, Signalize! / Calendar Girl, was released in November 2012. The group performed the second-season opening theme KIRA☆Power, featuring vocals by Waka, Fuuri, and Sunao, with lyrics by Aki Hata and composition by Kakeru Ishihama of MONACA. The accompanying second-season ending theme, Original Star☆彡, was sung by all eight members and composed by Hidekazu Tanaka of MONACA. Other notable theme songs include Diamond Happy and the insert song Hirari/Hitori/Kirari.
Beyond singles, STAR☆ANIS released several albums compiling their music from the anime. The best album Shining Star, released on February 11, 2015, is a two-disc collection featuring songs from the second season of Aikatsu! The album includes tracks such as KIRA☆Power, Happy Crescendo, Sweet Sp!ce, stranger alien, Dance in the rain, and SHINING LINE ~All Stars Ver.~, the latter performed by all eight vocalists. Many tracks feature solo performances from individual members, such as Fuuri performing Idol Activity! (Ver. Rock) ~Seira Solo Ver.~ and Ruka performing Idol Activity! ~Akari Solo Ver.~. The group also contributed to the complete song collections for the franchise, including the multi-volume TV Anime / Data Carddass Aikatsu! Complete Songs series released in 2019.
The musical identity of STAR☆ANIS is defined by energetic pop compositions that blend traditional Japanese idol music with rock, dance, and orchestral elements. The majority of their songs were produced by the MONACA music production team, with frequent contributions from composers such as Hidekazu Tanaka, Kakeru Ishihama, Keiichi Okabe, and Keigo Hoashi. Lyricists for the group's songs include Aki Hata, Saori Codama, Natsumi Tadano, Junko Tsuji, and uRy. This consistent creative team gave STAR☆ANIS a cohesive yet varied sound that became synonymous with the Aikatsu! franchise during its early seasons.
The group's industry significance lies in their role as the musical foundation for one of the most successful Japanese idol-themed multimedia franchises. Aikatsu! spanned multiple anime seasons, arcade games, and merchandise lines, and STAR☆ANIS provided the vocal performances that brought the fictional idols to life. Unlike many anime music projects where voice actors perform their own character songs, Aikatsu! employed dedicated singers through STAR☆ANIS while separate voice actors provided dialogue. This separation allowed for a distinct musical identity maintained across numerous releases. The group continued performing and recording for the franchise through 2016, with a temporary graduation from Aikatsu! songs announced in February 2018.
