Description
PERSONZ is a Japanese rock band formed in 1983, known for a career that blends original music with significant contributions to anime soundtracks. The band's core and long-standing lineup consists of vocalist and lyricist Jill, bassist Mitsugu Watanabe, drummer Tsutomu Fujita, and guitarist Takeshi Honda. Guitarist Tsukasa Tanaka was an early member before leaving the group in 1992. PERSONZ made their major debut in 1987 with the release of their self-titled first album on the Teichiku BAIDIS label. Their sound, characterized as a blend of rock and new wave with pop sensibilities, gained widespread attention after their song Dear Friends was used as a theme for the television drama Mama Haha Boogie.
Within the realm of anime, PERSONZ is credited with providing theme music for two notable productions from the 1990s. The band performed the song sayonara wa iwanai, which was used as the ending theme for the 1994 film YuYu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report. This single was released on March 2, 1994. Several years later, their track Yume no hate made mo was featured as an ending theme for the television anime Bakusō Kyōdai Let's & Go!!, specifically used during the series' run from its fortieth to fifty-first episodes. This song was released as a single by the band on November 13, 1996.
Beyond their anime work, PERSONZ achieved significant commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their third album, No More Tears, reached number two on the Oricon albums chart, and the subsequent album, Dreamers Only, debuted at number one. The band has released numerous studio albums throughout their career, including The Show Must Go On (1993), Ours (1995), and Apollo (2001), demonstrating continued activity into the 21st century. PERSONZ celebrated their 40th anniversary in the mid-2020s with special tours and live performances. Their enduring presence in the Japanese music industry is marked by a dedicated fan base and a reputation for energetic live shows, having performed at historic venues such as the Nippon Budokan.
