Description
The artistic partnership between composer and lyricist Jun Maeda and vocalist Nagi Yanagi represents a notable collaboration within Japanese anime and visual novel music. Jun Maeda is best known as a founding member of the visual novel brand Key, where he has contributed as a scenario writer, composer, and lyricist for emotionally charged works such as Air, Kanon, and Clannad. Nagi Yanagi, born on May 31, 1987 in Osaka Prefecture, is a singer and songwriter who first gained widespread recognition as the guest vocalist for the music group Supercell from 2009 to 2011, performing on their debut single Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari and the album Today Is a Beautiful Day.

Their professional collaboration began following their work together on Key's visual novel Rewrite in 2011, for which Yanagi performed vocal tracks. Maeda, who had been listening to Yanagi's work with Supercell during a period of personal difficulty, proposed creating a concept album together. The result was Owari no Hoshi no Love Song, released on April 25, 2012 under Maeda's independent label Flaming June. The album featured thirteen tracks, all written by Maeda with one joint composition with Taisei Nakagawa, and showcased Yanagi's vocals across stories unified by themes of worlds facing destruction. The album peaked at number six on the Oricon weekly albums chart and reached number one on the Billboard Top Independent Albums and Singles chart. A preview single, Killer Song, had been released earlier at Comiket 81 on December 29, 2011, featuring three tracks including the title song and Owari no Sekai kara.

The duo reunited to provide music for the anime series The Day I Became a God (Kamisama ni Natta Hi), which aired in fall 2020. Maeda served as the original creator and scriptwriter for the series while also contributing to the soundtrack. For this project, Jun Maeda x Nagi Yanagi were credited with the opening theme Kimi to Iu Shinwa, the ending theme Goodbye Seven Seas, and the insert songs Natsu Nagi (also written as Natsunagi or Summer Calm) and Takaramono ni Natta Hi. The soundtrack, released on March 24, 2021 under Key Sounds Label, featured music by MANYO, Jun Maeda, and ANANT-GARDE EYES, with Yanagi providing vocals for the Maeda-composed tracks. The arrangements on these anime songs were handled by MANYO rather than Maeda himself.

A later collaboration appeared on the album Love Song from the Water, released on October 26, 2022. This album collected in-game songs from the mobile role-playing game Heaven Burns Red, for which Maeda wrote the scenario and composed music. Yanagi provided vocals for the tracks, with arrangements primarily by MANYO. The album became available on streaming platforms on July 21, 2024.

The musical identity of the Jun Maeda x Nagi Yanagi partnership is defined by Maeda's characteristic piano-driven compositions and narrative lyrics exploring themes of loss, memory, and emotional endurance, paired with Yanagi's clear and expressive vocal delivery. Maeda has described Yanagi's voice as a source of creative inspiration, and Yanagi has noted the technical demands of singing Maeda's melodies, which often feature rapid tempos and dense lyrical passages. Their work together, while limited to specific projects rather than an ongoing group formation, has been recognized for its emotional depth and for achieving commercial success on Japanese music charts.
