Description
The Stand Up was a Japanese punk rock band formed in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, in 2001. The founding members included vocalist Takanori Sakamoto, guitarist Takehiro Ōta, bassist Atsushi Fukushima, and drummer Yasuhiro Tsukakoshi, who had been classmates in middle school. The band began their career independently, releasing their first album in 2002, which gained attention through word-of-mouth and reached number one on indie charts. In 2003, The Stand Up made their major label debut with the album Chippoke na Yūki … under BMG Music Japan, before moving to the label Nippon Crown in 2006. The band entered a period of inactivity in late 2008, resumed professional activities in May 2012, and ultimately disbanded in 2013.
The Stand Up is primarily known within anime for their contributions to the television series Kyō Kara Maō! (also known as Kyo kara Maoh!). The band performed the opening theme song Hate Shinaku Tōi Sora ni (Never-ending Distant Sky) and the ending theme song Suteki na Shiawase (Wonderful Happiness) for the NHK-BS2 broadcast of the anime. These songs were released together on a maxi single on May 26, 2004, which also included a live version of the track Otsukisama recorded in Kumagaya in February 2004. The opening theme Hate Shinaku Tōi Sora ni has been specifically credited to the band as its writers. Other songs by The Stand Up used in the same anime series include Romantic Morning and Hitsuyou no Pocket. The band released this material on the Heaven's Rock Records label.
