Description
Spira Spica is a Japanese pop rock project that began as a band formed in Nara Prefecture in 2013. The group originally started under the name Snowman before changing to Spira Spica in 2018. The name derives from the Latin phrase Spira Spera, meaning as long as one lives, there is hope, combined with Spica, a bright blue star, reflecting the project’s aim to be a guiding light for listeners.
The musical identity of Spira Spica is centered on energetic rock instrumentation paired with melodic, accessible J-pop vocals. Vocalist Mikiha is the primary constant member and lyricist. For much of its history, the group operated as a trio featuring Mikiha on vocals, Yuji Teranishi on guitar, and Masuda on bass, with support musicians including drummer Keisuke Okamoto and keyboardist Ryosuke Shigenaga. Following the departure of Teranishi and Masuda at the end of August 2022, Spira Spica transitioned into a solo project led by Mikiha. The project is signed to the SACRA MUSIC label under Sony Music Artists.
Spira Spica gained significant recognition through numerous anime theme song credits. The project made its major debut on August 8, 2018, with the single Start Dash, which was used as the second ending theme for the television anime Gundam Build Divers. The group continued its association with the Gundam Build franchise by providing Re:RISE as the opening theme for the original net animation Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE. For the second season of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE, Spira Spica contributed both Twinkle and Heartful, as confirmed by their release on the Re:RISE -e.p.- 2 single on August 5, 2020.
Beyond the Gundam franchise, Spira Spica has contributed to a variety of other anime series. Koi wa Miracle served as the ending theme for the anime Ao-chan Can’t Study. Iyayo Iyayo mo Suki no Uchi was used as the opening theme for Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?. The double A-side single Sayonara Namida and Hoshi no Kakera, released on December 19, 2020, featured songs tied to the anime Warlords of Sigrdrifa, with Sayonara Namida as the ending theme and Hoshi no Kakera as an insert song. Pyramid Dai Gyakuten was released as the opening theme for The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter on February 24, 2021. One of the project’s most recognized songs, Sansan Days, was released on February 2, 2022, as the opening theme for the popular anime series My Dress-Up Darling.
Spira Spica has released several studio albums. The first major-label album, Pop Step Jump!, was released on March 18, 2020. This was followed by the second album, Nagareboshi Train, on March 16, 2022, which compiled many of their anime tie-in songs from that period. The project continues to release new music, including digital singles such as Gyutto Zutto in August 2022 and Saikyo Mirai Fanfare in February 2023, solidifying their presence as a consistent creator of anime music within the J-pop and rock genres.
